The official start of summer is almost here, which means we’ll be wearing lighter, thinner fabrics like linen and so on — so it’s the perfect time to round up the best underwear that prevents VPL. It’s been quite a while since we did a post about this, so we’re also due for an update. Most of the below picks are reader recs!

Note: We’ve had mixed reactions in the comments over the years, so we realize some of you will be interested in these picks while others simply don’t care about VPL, and that’s (obviously) fine!

Additionally, some of you probably have different thoughts about the VPL issue depending on the situation; for example, maybe you try to avoid it at work but you don’t care about anyone noticing the lines of your underwear at the gym.

A note about laundry: My favorite no-VPL underwear (see the CK ones below!) are labeled “hand wash” but I’ve been washing them with Woolite in a mesh laundry bag for years, and they’ve been fine. (I actually haven’t literally hand-washed any of my clothes in years.)

Soma Vanishing Edge Panties

Soma’s Vanishing Edge line features lots of styles: high-leg, bikini, thong, hipster, boyshort, and more. Also, some have lace accents and others don’t, while some have a “vanishing tummy” feature.

Vanishing Edge styles are designed to be comfortable and breathable, though the fabric content differs. A few I picked at random have the combos of 90% nylon / 10% spandex / 100% cotton gusset, modal / cotton / spandex / 100% cotton gusset, and nylon / spandex.

The pictured style, a bestseller at Soma, is the Vanishing Edge Bikini Panty. It comes in sizes XS-XXL in a ton of solid colors and prints.

Washing instructions: Some styles machine wash, some hand wash

SEAMLESS Hanes Boyshorts

If you’d like an anti-VPL style that definitely won’t shift or ride up (like some ultra-thin underwear may), these boyshorts are for you. Hanes is an affordable brand, too — and after all, not everyone wants to spend $40 on one pair of underwear, especially if you’re not sure you’ll even like the style!

The brand’s boyshort styles have a lot to offer. They made from an anti-chafe, seamless, breathable stretch fabric, and Hanes even makes period underwear options. You can choose from neutrals and fun, bright colors, mostly in moisture-wicking fabric. These are machine washable and include plus sizes. Plus, no itchy tags!

These boyshorts come in a six-pack of assorted colors at Amazon (with thousands of positive reviews) and Hanes.com. They’re available in sizes S-2XL.

Washing instructions: Cold water wash

Jockey No Pantyline Promise

Jockey’s No Pantyline Promise line does exactly what it says on the tin. They’re mostly made from Tactel, which is a soft nylon fabric used for things like underwear and swimwear. (It kinda sounds like “tactile,” which makes me think this underwear will reach out and touch me, ew.)

Jockey’s offerings include neutrals, other colors, and prints, and the styles are string bikini, bikini, brief, and high-cut. Jockey’s size ranges for their various products are 4-11 (the brand’s own sizing system) and S-3X.

The pictured hipster brief is available at Amazon and Jockey.com. It’s made from a mix of Tactel and spandex (with a 100% cotton gusset) in sizes 6-10, with a couple of plus sizes also in stock.

Washing instructions: Machine wash

Commando BETTER THAN NOTHING Classic Solid Bikini

Commando’s Better Than Nothing bikini style is specifically designed to prevent panty lines with its raw-cut edges — plus no elastic or trim. The fabric is a breathable, stretchy, Italian microfiber blend that won’t pill, dries quickly, and is machine washable. (I didn’t expect those washing instructions with a higher-end lingerie brand like this — which is, btw, woman-founded.)

The nylon/elastane fabric is cut and sewn in the USA.

This bikini comes in beige, mocha, caramel, black, and white and is available in sizes XS/XS-L/XL. (Commando.com also offers plus sizes for other styles.)

Washing instructions: Machine wash, drip dry

Calvin Klein Invisibles

Three pairs of hipster underwear: navy, gray, periwinkleThree pairs of hipster underwear: navy, gray, periwinkle

I simply cannot do this post without mentioning my favorite no-VPL solution from Calvin Klein! Their bestselling Invisibles line (also available at Amazon) has underwear, bras, and bralettes that are designed to be, well, invisible under clothes. Their hipster style, pictured, has been my favorite for years for wearing underneath leggings and thinner dresses/skirts. (Note that they can sometimes shift with looser clothes or with jeans, unfortunately.)

I have a few colors of these, which are made from seamless microfiber, are tag-free, and have a 100% cotton gusset. Right now they’re available in nine colors, ranging from neutrals to pink and slate blue.

Three-packs are available at Amazon, including the pictured color assortment; the style is currently on sale at CalvinKlein.us. Sizes available are XS-XL

Washing instructions: Machine washable (though because they’re thin and delicate, I wash in a mesh bag in the hand-wash cycle, which makes them last a long time).

What do you think is the best underwear to prevent VPL, readers? (Or do you not really care about VPL?)
