I’ve been refreshing my closet with a few spring-friendly pieces, and I also have my upcoming trip to London and the Cotswolds in mind. This latest try-on includes some really versatile finds—think classic black pants, lightweight layers, easy tops, and polished spring shoes you can wear right now. These are the kinds of staples that work for everything from casual days to more put-together looks, and I’ve rounded up a little bit of everything to mix and match this season.
SIZING NOTES: I’m 5’5″ and I usually wear a small or medium in tops and dresses, a 29 or 30 in jeans and pants, and a size 8 shoe. Gifted items are indicated by c/o; everything else I purchased myself.
Spring Coats: Polished Layers for Unpredictable Weather
I’ve had my eye on a few mac-style trench coats lately, and I also need to replace my go-to black raincoat—it’s getting too small, and I can’t be without one this time of year.
Talbots Poplin Coat
at Talbots (S/M) // MOTHER Roller (29) // Jenni Kayne sweater (S) // Donald Pliner heels (8)

DETAILS: Versatile. Timeless. Our iconic mac coat in crisp cotton poplin with a sleek back vent seam. Accented with sleek side panels and welt front pockets. The perfect outfit topper for round-the-clock ease.
- Button front closure
- Welt front pockets
- Water Resistant
- Length: Misses: 38″; Petite: 36″; Plus: 39 1/2″
- Material: 60% Cotton, 40% Biconstituent Fiber
- Care: Dry Clean
I really like the more minimalistic vibe of mac-style trench coats, and I shared the Talbots Poplin Coat in a size small in a previous try-on haul. Here’s a refresher…

Talbots Poplin Coat, size small
This is a nice, high-quality coat, and I love the color. The contrast pinstriped lining is also a fun detail. The size small had a good fit overall, but it felt a little snug, so I re-ordered it in a medium, which fits much better. That said, it’s still a bit plain, and I’m not a fan of the tonal buttons—they blend in with the coat a little too much.

Talbots Poplin Coat, size medium
VERDICT: This is a solid choice if you’re looking for a classic style, but I ended up preferring the more oversized fit and contrasting buttons on the Sézane. Keep reading…
Sézane Clyde Trench Coat
at Sézane (6) // MOTHER Roller (29) // Jenni Kayne sweater (S) // Donald Pliner heels (8)

DETAILS:
- Oversize trench coat
- Check lining
- Water-repellent material
- Length: 44.5″
- 100% Organic cotton
This one has a much different fit, even though the styling details are similar. It’s longer and more oversized, and the fabric has a really nice weight to it. I also love the contrasting buttons and the plaid lining.
Side note: Sézane offers free shipping on orders over $200 and free returns—but you only have 14 days to return items after receiving them. I’ve ordered and returned a few things from them before, and the process is easy, but in this case, I was traveling and missed the return window for the coat… so that kind of made the decision easy for me!

VERDICT: I decided to keep this one—although I didn’t have much of a choice, haha! It’s really well made, and I feel like it’s more in line with the look I want right now. I’ve already worn it a couple of times.
Talbots Knit A-Line Coat
at Talbots (S) // MOTHER Roller (29) // Jenni Kayne sweater (S) // Donald Pliner heels (8)

DETAILS: This timeless and elegant A-line silhouette is detailed with playful bell sleeves and sleek side panels. Just right when you need extra warmth.
- Button front closure
- Welt front pockets
- Sleeves Only Lined
- Length: Misses: 33″; Petite: 31″; Plus: 34 1/2″
- 62% Polyester, 33% Viscose, 5% Spandex
- Care: Dry Clean
Obviously not a trench, but the blue was so pretty I had to try it. It reminded me of a blue wool coat I had from Ann Taylor years ago that I wore constantly. This one has a similar vibe, and while it’s a little snug, I do like it overall. I just didn’t love it enough to try the medium.

VERDICT: I decided to pass on this one.
Lululemon Waterproof Rain Jacket
at Lululemon (S) // ATM stripe tee (M) // Citizens Palma (also at Bloomies & Shopbop (29) // Schutz Arissa (8)

DETAILS: You’re never too old for puddle jumping. Make the most of the wettest weather in this seam-sealed, waterproof jacket.
- Relaxed fit feels roomy and can be worn over larger layers.
- Size down if you prefer a slimmer fit.
- Hood cinches at the front and back.
- Cinch the interior waist drawcord to customize your fit.
- Zippered hand pockets with hidden phone sleeve.
- Body: 100% Nylon; Middle: 100% Polyurethane; Back: 100% Recycled Polyester
- Machine wash cold, tumble dry low, do not bleach.

This raincoat from Lululemon is a great option if function is your top priority. It looks nice too, but it’s not quite as sleek as a few of the others I tried. That said, the quality is excellent—it feels substantial and well made, with all the features I was looking for: waterproof (not just water resistant) and seam-sealed. The size small has plenty of room for layering, so I’d say it runs a little big.

VERDICT: I like this one a lot, but I ended up finding another option I liked better. Keep reading…
L.L. Bean Women’s H2OFF Raincoat, Mesh-Lined
at L.L. Bean (S) // ATM stripe tee (M) // Citizens Palma (also at Bloomies & Shopbop (29) // Schutz Arissa (8)

DETAILS: Stay dry and comfortably cool with our women’s H2OFF® mesh-lined long raincoat, featuring waterproof microfiber polyester fabric, breathable mesh lining and improved hood.
- Relaxed Fit.
- 36 1/4″ long.
- Shell: 100% microfiber polyester.
- Upper body lining: 100% nylon mesh.
- Lower body: 100% nylon taffeta.
- Machine wash and dry.
This one also feels very substantial and has some great features, but I prefer the sleeker look of the styles below. I also wasn’t a fan of the pleat in the back—even though it likely allows for more movement, it’s just not my favorite design detail.
VERDICT: I decided to return this one, but it’s a solid choice if you like the styling.
Lululemon Rain Rebel in Sheer Oak
at Lululemon (8) // ATM stripe tee (M) // Citizens Palma (also at Bloomies & Shopbop (29) // Schutz Arissa (8)

DETAILS: Shake off wet weather with this sleek rain jacket. The waterproof exterior and soft, sweat-wicking liner will keep you happy and dry.
- Waterproof & seam-sealed
- Breathable; Windproof
- Classic fit falls away from your body with room for layering
- Cinchable hood and waist
- Zippered pockets with a hidden phone sleeve
- Interior pockets hold the essentials
- Mesh: 89% Nylon, 11% Elastane
- Machine wash cold, tumble dry low
- Back vent strategically placed to provide airflow
I really like the sleeker, more minimalistic look of this one. The fabric is super lightweight and soft, and the overall fit is very flattering. The only detail I’m unsure about is the flap on the back—it hides a vented section for breathability, which is probably a useful feature, but it slightly interrupts the otherwise streamlined silhouette. That said, I love the clean lines and the subtle shaping through the waist.

VERDICT: While I love this color, I think I want a black raincoat—it just feels more versatile for my wardrobe. This also felt a bit snug in the size 8, so I returned it and ordered the black in a size 10.
Athleta Rainout Ridge Long Trench
at Athleta (M) // Quince cashmere tee (L) // MOTHER Dazzler Flood – on sale! (30) // Margaux Demi Flat (39)

DETAILS: For staying dry in drizzles and downpours
- Waterproof and lightweight, this recycled fabric stays surprisingly breathable
- Secure zip pockets to store your essentials
- 100% Recycled Polyester
- WATERPROOF (RainOut): Ultimate seam-sealed protection and waterproof fabric finish keeps rain out
- WIND-RESISTANT: WINDFREE fabric protects in light to moderate wind conditions
- BREATHABLE: Airflow moves easily through the garment
- Machine wash cold and tumble dry on low.
- Body length: 36″
While I was waiting for the Lululemon Rain Rebel in black (size 10) to arrive, this coat came in. It’s very similar to the Lululemon—honestly, they’re almost indistinguishable in photos—but I did notice a few small differences after trying them both.
This one has visible snaps along the front placket, which may provide extra protection, but they make the coat look a bit busier compared to the simpler design of the Lululemon. It also has snaps on the sleeve cuffs, which are functional, but I doubt I’d ever use them—and they’re visible when unsnapped, which is a little distracting. On the other hand, this coat doesn’t have the back vent like the Lululemon, which I actually prefer—it gives it a sleeker look from behind.

Here’s how it looks zipped up. You can’t see the snaps when it’s zipped, and it has a nice, streamlined look—but it almost looks a little too big. I didn’t cinch the waist; when I tried, it hit a little lower than my natural waist and wasn’t especially flattering. Plus, I like having room for layering underneath.

VERDICT: This was a very strong contender, and since I got it on sale, it’s probably the one I should keep. But…
Lululemon Rain Rebel in Black
at Lululemon (10) // Quince cashmere tee (L) // MOTHER Dazzler Flood (30) // Margaux Demi (39)

DETAILS: Shake off wet weather with this sleek rain jacket. The waterproof exterior and soft, sweat-wicking liner will keep you happy and dry.
- Waterproof & seam-sealed
- Breathable; Windproof
- Classic fit falls away from your body with room for layering
- Cinchable hood and waist
- Zippered pockets with a hidden phone sleeve
- Interior pockets hold the essentials
- Mesh: 89% Nylon, 11% Elastane
- Machine wash cold, tumble dry low
The black Rain Rebel finally arrived in the size 10, and I definitely prefer the fit over the size 8—it looks much better from the back and just feels more comfortable overall. I still don’t love the back vent, but it’s not a deal-breaker.
Now that I’ve noticed the lack of front and sleeve snaps, I really appreciate the cleaner look of the front placket compared to the Athleta Rainout Ridge.

Here’s how it looks zipped up. I love the sleek, clean lines and the subtle shape through the waist, and overall, I feel like this one is just a bit more flattering than the Athleta—both zipped and unzipped. Plus, I noticed one more small detail: the sleeves on this one aren’t quite as wide, which I think also helps it look more tailored and polished.

VERDICT: It basically came down to this or the Athleta Rainout Ridge. They’re both great coats and very similar, but when it came time to pack for my trip to Nashville this week, I had to choose one—and I went with my gut. This is a coat I plan to have for many years, and in the end, I just like the Lululemon a little more. The differences are subtle, but I feel like it’s sleeker and more flattering. It is pricier, but for a coat I’ll reach for again and again, I don’t want cost to be the deciding factor.
Ballet Flats Are Back: The Spring Styles I’m Trying Now
I’ve been on a bit of a ballet flat kick lately. They’ve always been one of my favorite shoe styles, and I’m so happy they’re having a moment again. I’m thinking I’ll bring a black or camel pair to England with me in May, so that’s definitely influencing what I’m ordering right now. I’m looking for something very comfortable—something I can walk in for a bit if needed. And if they happen to have a little arch support? Even better!
Vionic Klara Cap Toe Flat in Camel
at Nordstrom // at Zappos // at DSW // at Amazon (8.5) // EVEREVE Jane Pullover (S) // MOTHER Dazzler Flood (29)

DETAILS: A squared-off cap toe adds subtle charm to this minimalist leather ballet flat decorated with a dainty bow and keyhole cutout.
- 2″ heel; (size 8.5)
- Leather upper/synthetic lining and sole
These are surprisingly cute and flattering for a comfort shoe, and I especially like this versatile camel color. The slightly squared-off toe keeps them from looking too sweet to my eye, despite the bow and the cutout. Plus, they’re so comfortable, with a soft footbed and good arch support. You can even remove the Vionic insole and replace it with your own inserts, if needed.
VERDICT: I’m holding onto these for now.
Vionic Klara Cap Toe Flat in Black
at Nordstrom // at Zappos // at DSW // at Amazon (8) // Isabel hoodie (M) // MOTHER Dazzler (29)

DETAILS: A squared-off cap toe adds subtle charm to this minimalist leather ballet flat decorated with a dainty bow and keyhole cutout.
- 2″ heel; (size 8.5)
- Leather upper/synthetic lining and sole
This is the same shoe as the camel pair, and I like it equally well. Oddly enough, the black fits better in the size 8, while the camel felt better in the 8.5. No idea why—but it’s something to keep in mind if you’re between sizes.
VERDICT: These are still in my room at home, but I haven’t worn them out yet.
Margaux The Demi
at Margaux (39) // Quince cashmere tee (L) // MOTHER Dazzler Flood (30)

DETAILS: Our bestselling ballet flat mixes a classic look with unparalleled comfort. Handmade in Spain, it’s the shoe Vogue is “obsessed” with.
- A soft flat with a flexible leather sole
- Italian nappa upper with leather lining
- Leather trim and fixed leather bow
- 5 mm of plush foam padding
- Handmade in Spain
I was influenced by Meghan at Wit & Whimsy to try these cap-toe ballet flats—she raves about this brand, so I was curious. These are definitely a luxury shoe, and the quality is evident. While I loved the cushioned footbed and the high-end materials, this particular pair didn’t quite work for me. The size 38 felt too short, but when I re-ordered the 39, it gaped on the sides of my feet. That said, it did make me curious to try more from this brand.
VERDICT: Sadly, I had to return these.
Margaux The Demi Flat in Black
at Margaux // at Nordstrom (39) // Evereve June pullover (M) // Frank & Eileen Derry (29)

DETAILS: A timeless silhouette designed with comfort-first details (like foam padding at the insole and an adjustable bow). It’s the ballet flat Vogue is “obsessed” with.
- The Demi is an unstructured shoe with an adjustable cord for a customizable fit. If you are between sizes or widths, we recommend taking the smaller size.
- A soft, unstructured flat with a flexible leather sole
- A working cord bow allows for a more customized fit and feel.
- Italian nappa upper with grosgrain trim
- A plush 5mm layer of foam adds a cloud-like feel to every insole.
- Handmade in Spain
This pair, however, fits like a glove! The leather also feels noticeably softer—which is strange, since they’re technically the same shoe as the cap-toe version. Maybe the solid colors use a different type of leather? Either way, these feel like they were made for my low-profile feet with a wide toe box and narrow heel. The cushioned footbed is an added bonus, but they do not have any arch support—so that’s worth noting.
VERDICT: I wore these all over the mall on Sunday, and my feet were quite happy—no blisters! That said, they did feel tired by the time I got back to the car, likely due to the lack of support. I actually found myself wishing I’d worn the Vionics. All that to say: I love these, but I wouldn’t want to walk miles in them. They’re beautiful, though, so I’m keeping them.
Margaux The Demi Flat in Saddle
at Margaux // at Nordstrom (39) // Rails Geneva Cardigan – on sale! (S) // MOTHER Dazzler – on sale! (30)

This is the same pair in the Saddle color, and I love it too—but I may stick with the Vionic in camel and the Margaux in black. I don’t really need more than two pairs.
VERDICT: Likely returning, but only because I don’t need them.
Margaux The Pointe Flat in Black
at Margaux // at Nordstrom (39) // MOTHER Weekender (29) // Jenni Kayne Flynn (S)

DETAILS: Designed with a delicate toe that tapers just enough to create a sleek silhouette, this flat “refines any look” per Marie Claire.
- Italian nappa upper with grosgrain trim and leather lining with a leather bow
- A plush 5mm layer of foam adds a cloud-like feel to every insole.
- Every strap, buckle, and line was carefully considered to maximize comfort.
- Handmade in Spain
These are very similar to the solid Demi style above and just as comfortable, but with a pointed toe. I love them—they’re adorable—but I feel like the rounded toe looks a little less fussy and works better with my style.
VERDICT: I returned these… but after looking at the photos again, I’m second-guessing that decision!
Black Pants: Timeless Staples You Can Dress Up or Down
I got it into my head that I need a pair of black pants for my trip to London and the Cotswolds in May, so I’ve been ordering black pants like it’s my job. Plus, they’re a wardrobe basic I really want to have nailed down—especially for those rare occasions when jeans just won’t cut it—but I have the hardest time finding a pair I actually like. Black pants always end up feeling a little frumpy to me, even when I style them the same way I would a pair of washed black jeans.
I used to love the Vince Crop Legging—it was my go-to for several years. But now they’re too tight, and when I size up to the large, they just don’t fit right. It’s super frustrating because they’re such beautiful pants. So anyway… here we are!
Quince Ultra-Stretch Ponte Bootcut Pants
at Quince (M) // KUT Kloth Alora (M) // Schutz flats (8)

Ultra-Stretch Ponte Bootcut Pants (28″ inseam)
DETAILS: If dress pants and yoga pants had a baby – this would be it. They feel like a yoga pant, but look like a dress pant. Plus, the 4-way stretch you’d usually see in squat-proof leggings will prevent any sheerness, making these appropriate for any setting.
- Full length.
- 4-way stretch, wrinkle-resistant
- Faux front and back pockets
- Pull-on style with flat elasticized waistband and belt loops
- Machine wash cold. Lay flat to dry.
These come in four inseam lengths, and I ordered both the 28″ and 30″ to try. They’re intended to be full-length pants, and the 28″ length is perfect with the ballet flats and my Paul Green platform sneakers, while the 30″ works okay with a 2″ heel—though a 3″ heel might be even better.

Ultra-Stretch Ponte Bootcut Pants (28″ inseam) // Paul Green platform sneakers (8)
I really like the slim bootcut silhouette; it’s very flattering. That said, both pairs were hard to pull on and verrrry tight in the waist.

Quince Ultra-Stretch Ponte Bootcut Pants (30″ inseam) // Vince Bianca Slingback Mid Heel Pumps (8)
VERDICT: I didn’t find these comfortable at all, so they went back.
Quince Ultra-Stretch Ponte Straight Leg Pants
at Quince (M) // KUT Kloth Alora (M) // Paul Green Hadley (8)

DETAILS: Meet the straight cut version of our favorite ponte pants, offered in multiple inseams. Feels like a yoga pant but with the classic look of your favorite straight legged pants. A flattering design and silhouette, these pants are equally comfy and versatile. Plus, the 4-way stretch you’d usually see in squat-proof leggings makes these appropriate for any setting.
- Ankle length
- 4-way stretch, wrinkle-resistant
- Faux front and back pockets
- Pull-on style with flat elasticized waistband and belt loops
- 67% rayon, 28% nylon, 5% spandex
- Machine wash cold. Lay flat to dry.
These also come in four inseam lengths, but since they’re designed to be ankle length, I went with the 28″. Once again, they’re flattering and have a nice silhouette—but the waistband was unbearably tight on my midlife middle. I also didn’t love how they landed on these sneakers (which happen to be the pair I’m planning to wear in England).
VERDICT: I returned these as well.
Quince Ultra-Stretch Ponte Pintuck Ankle Pants
at Quince (L) // Quince Cashmere tee (L) // Margaux Demi (39) // Paul Green Hadley (8)

DETAILS: If work pants and yoga pants had a kid – this would be it. Part of our best-selling ponte pants collection, this stretchy, double knit style is cropped at the ankle and designed with a slim leg and seamwork detailing for a streamlined effect. Plus, they’re equally appropriate for the office or the couch.
- Made from 67% rayon, 28% nylon, 5% spandex
- Open stitch seams down the front and back of the pant create a polished and streamlined look
- Crafted in a double knit ponte fabric that resists wrinkling, pilling, and fading
- 4-way stretch
- Invisible side zipper, elastic waistband
This pair also came in my first order, in a size medium. They’re available in 25″ and 27″ inseams, and I chose the 27″, which hits me at a high ankle—almost cropped. The medium was laughably small—I couldn’t even fasten them—so I sent them back and re-ordered in a large, which is what I’m wearing here.
The waistband wasn’t as uncomfortably tight as the other size mediums, but I didn’t love the fit through the leg, and they felt a little short with ballet flats.

Ideally, the pants I bring for travel will work with both flats and sneakers, so I also tried them with my Paul Green Hadley sneakers. I didn’t hate the length with sneakers—at least the hemline didn’t bunch—but I still wasn’t loving the overall look. The fabric also felt a little stiff. I just didn’t love these.

VERDICT: These went back too.
Side note: I also ordered the two pairs above in a size large just to compare. While they felt better in the waist, they were too big through the legs. #thisis52. I don’t think it’s an issue with the pants; I think it’s more of a midlife middle thing, but I won’t lie, it’s quite frustrating.
Z Supply Do It All Straight Leg Pant
at Z Supply (M) // FRAME Le Mid Rise V-Neck (XS) // Paul Green Hadley (8)

DETAILS: This versatile pant is made of our signature ponte fabric that gives it a structured yet elevated feel. Perfect for transitioning from the office to daily life, you’ll want this pant on hand for any occasions that call for a touch of class.
- 62% Rayon, 33% Nylon, 5% Spandex
- Elastic waistband
- Velvety smooth rayon
- Wash Cold, Hang to Dry
These pants didn’t do much for me at all—even though, I’ll admit, they don’t look terrible in these photos. But once again, the waistband felt too tight, and the rise is super high. They’re also looser through the calf and hit at an awkward length—I feel like they’d look much better if they were full length.

VERDICT: These went back too.
M.M. LaFleur The Colby Travel Pant – OrigamiTech
at M.M. LaFleur (8) // FRAME Le Mid Rise V-Neck Tee (XS) // Paul Green Hadley (8)

DETAILS: The Colby is our version of a sweatpant for work. An elastic waistband at the back provides comfort and ease, while a jogger-style leg that tapers at the ankle creates a streamlined silhouette.
- Fit: Looser Fitting
- Body Type: Hips-friendly, Petite-friendly
- Waistline: High rise
- Bottom length: Regular
- 90% Polyester, 10% Polyurethane
- Machine wash cold. Do not bleach. Do not tumble dry. Line dry. Low iron. Dry clean.
Since I was striking out with lower-priced brands, I decided to order a few pairs of black pants from M.M. LaFleur. They’re known for thoughtfully designed, high-quality workwear, and if I can find a pair of go-to black pants I really like, I don’t mind paying a bit more.
This pair is meant to have more of an athleisure vibe, but I hated how they fit. They were super baggy in the hips and thighs. I almost think I could size down to the 6, but honestly, I don’t think I’d like them even then.

VERDICT: Another pair of black pants going back!
M.M. LaFleur Foster Cigarette Pant – PowerStretch
at M.M. LaFleur (10) // Quince cashmere tee (L) // Vionic Klara (8)

DETAILS: With over 70,000 fans, the Fosters are our #1 best-selling pants of all time. They strike the perfect balance between structure and stretch. Adjustable hems allow you to switch the length from full-length to cropped.
- Fit: Curve Hugging
- Body Type: Hips-friendly, Maternity-friendly, Petite-friendly
- Waistline: High rise
- Bottom length: Regular
- 52% Cotton, 38% Nylon, 10% Elastane
- Machine wash cold. No bleach. Low iron. No tumble dry. Dry cleanable.
This was the first pair of the bunch that I actually considered keeping. They were a bit of a hassle to get on, but once fastened, the size 10 seemed to almost fit—though I found myself wondering if I might need the size 12. (Odd, considering the size 8 in the Colby Travel Pant was almost too big.)
They still felt annoyingly tight in the waist, but the fit through the hips and legs was great. I’d say they’re the most flattering pair I’ve tried so far. I even tried sitting in them for a few minutes to see if they’d loosen up, and they did, but I couldn’t imagine wearing them on a long-haul flight. And whatever black pants I end up with should be able to handle that kind of situation—although I may just wear my Vuori joggers to be sure I’m comfortable. Anywho.

I couldn’t quite decide if the length worked with my sneakers—they sort of buckle at the top—but the website specifically notes: We recommend pre-washing this style before making any alterations, since minor shrinkage may occur. So they might shrink just enough to work.
I do really like how they land with ballet flats, and this is an outfit I plan to bring to England. I think the overall look works—but I just can’t deal with pants that are tight in the waist. You can even see a bit of a muffin top through this lightweight sweater.

VERDICT: I kept these in my room and tried them on a few different times with different outfit combinations, but in the end, I returned them. They have a short return window, and I didn’t want to get stuck with them and regret it. That said, I might revisit them before my trip if I don’t find anything else. I could also try the size 12, but I have a feeling they’ll be too big through the legs.
Plot twist: I realized after returning them that the length is actually adjustable—you can convert them to a cropped style if you want. I wish I’d tried that! Now I really might need to re-order…
Tuckernuck Black Compression September Pant
at Tuckernuck (M) // Rails Geneva (S) // Vince boots (8)

DETAILS: The September Pants are an elevated everyday style with performance qualities. These are the type of style that you can wear to the office, out to dinner, or on the greens. These elevated pants are a true closet staple.
- Elastic banded waist
- Side zip pockets
- Slightly flared silhouette
- 68% Viscose, 27% Nylon, 5% Spandex
- Machine wash cold, gentle cycle. Flat dry or tumble dry low.
I didn’t care for these at all. I don’t mind the slightly flared silhouette, but the length felt awkward—and they’re actually shorter in the back than the front, which just looked off to me.

Here’s how they look with sneakers… also nope!

KUT Kloth Alora (M) // Paul Green Hadley (8)
VERDICT: Needless to say, these went back too.
Frank & Eileen Derry Illusion Pull-On Jean
at Frank & Elieen (29/30) // KUT Kloth Alora (M) // Paul Green Hadley (8)

DETAILS: Meet Derry Illusion, your favorite jean without the fuss of zippers and pockets. Designed to gently curve over your hips and sit at your natural waist with a straight leg fit and cropped length.
- Hand-distressed raw hem
- Intentionally designed with no fussy buttons, zippers, or pockets
- Contour waistband that sits just below your natural waistline
- Slim-straight fit
- Inseam: 27.5”, front rise: 10.25″, leg opening: 13″
- 81% Cotton, 11% Lyocell, 6% EME, 2% Elastane
- Machine wash on cold; tumble dry on low or hang dry.
After trying on all of those pants, I realized I had this pair of Frank & Eileen Derry Pull-On Jeans hanging in my closet. Technically, they’re jeans—and they do have a raw hem—but the inky black wash and slim silhouette almost make them feel more like skinny pants. They’re actually quite similar in fit to the M.M. LaFleur Foster Cigarette Pant.
Since I haven’t worn them in a while, I decided to see how they’re fitting these days. Sadly, they’re a little snug in the waist and give me a bit of a muffin top with more fitted tops like this one. That said, they’re really comfortable, and I like the silhouette and the length—so I decided to order the size 30 to try, since that’s what I’m wearing in a lot of denim lately.

Here they are in the size 30. You might not notice a big difference in the photos, but I could definitely feel it. In this fitted top, they still create a slight indentation at the waistband, but it’s not a deal breaker.

Frank & Eileen Derry, size 30 // LNA Harrison Rib Tee (M) // Vionic Klara (8)
VERDICT: I’m keeping these, whether I bring them to England with me or not. I don’t wear them a ton, but I like them, and I want to have the right size for my current body.
Athleta Endless High Rise Pant
at Athleta // Evereve Nora muscle tee (S) // LOFT wedge tee (S) // Quince cashmere tee (L) // Paul Green Hadley (8) // Vionic Klara (8)

DETAILS: These refined, subtly textured, and perfectly stretchy pants are all you need for commuting, work, and travel.
- Semi-fitted, skims easily over the body
- Sits at the natural waist
- Straight leg fits slim through the leg then eases up below the knee
- Inseam: Regular 27 1/2″, Petite 25 1/2″, Tall 30 1/2″
- 86% Recycled Polyester/14% Spandex
- Machine wash and line dry
It probably feels like there are no black pants left in the world that I haven’t tried—but I also placed an order with Athleta when they had a sale last week. I always hear great things about their Endless Pant—these are known as excellent travel pants that can also work for dining out or other dressier functions once you reach your destination.
They definitely live up to their name in terms of rise—these are very high-waisted. But unlike a lot of women, I actually find that comfortable since my waist sits super high on my torso. (You can probably see what I mean in the rear view photo below—my waist is almost at my armpits!)

I also tried them with that Quince striped sweater and ballet flats, but the whole outfit felt kind of frumpy to me. I think it’s because the pants have a looser silhouette than what I was looking for.
On the plus side, they weren’t tight in the waist! Of course, they also might be too big… but it was nice to try on a pair of pants that didn’t make me want to rip them off, for a change.

VERDICT: I think I’m returning these, but I’m wondering if I should try the size 6.
Athleta Brooklyn Mid Rise Pants
at Athleta (8) // Evereve Nora muscle tee (S) // Paul Green Hadley (8)

Okay, last pair! The Brooklyn is more of an athleisure style, with side panels that give it a slightly sportier vibe. It has a very comfortable mid-rise fit with a rib-knit waistband, and the fabric is super lightweight and breathable—I can tell these would dry quickly, which is great for travel.
I didn’t even try them with ballet flats, since I wouldn’t wear them that way, but I kind of like how they look with sneakers. I didn’t have time to try on any other outfit combinations (I was squeezing this in right before leaving on a trip), but I may play around with them a bit more when I get home. They look totally fine with this tee and sneakers, though.

VERDICT: I might keep these—if only for travel days. I can’t see wearing them out to dinner, but they’re great pants for the plane or a long day of sightseeing.
A Few More Spring Try-Ons: Tops, Sweaters & Sale-Worthy Denim
Since a few of these pieces made it into the outfits above, and some are currently on sale, I decided to include them here rather than save them for a separate post. These are easy spring staples I’ve been trying out to pair with the black pants and ballet flats from earlier: classic tees, lightweight sweaters, and a pair of jeans that are worth a look if you’re refreshing your wardrobe this season.
LOFT Wedge Tee

DETAILS: Our most dressed up tee with an of-the-moment silhouette and details – in an extra soft combed cotton blend. Round neck. Cap sleeves.
- Classic — follows your contours with a little roomlength
- Regular – hits below natural waist
- 25″ long
- 100% Polyester
- Machine Washable
I’m on the hunt for a good black and white striped tee, and someone alerted me to this one from LOFT. I’ve tried the plain white version before, but I forgot how big it runs. I ordered both the small and medium—this is the small, and as you can see, it’s quite oversized. Here’s how it looks with a front tuck:

VERDICT: I didn’t have time to try it on with jeans (which is how I’d normally wear it), and it looks super frumpy with these pants. That said, I think it’s just too big overall. I may re-order in an XS, since it’s on sale.
Banana Cashmere Short-Sleeve Sweater in White & Navy Blue Stripe
at Banana Republic (M) // MOTHER Dazzler Flood (29) // Paul Green Hadley (8)

DETAILS: The vibe is lightweight luxury. This updated take on the classic crew-neck sweater has not-too-tight fit through the body and short sleeves so you can style it like a t-shirt.
- Sits close to the body with a straight silhouette.
- Crew neck.
- Straight hem.
- 100% cashmere.
- Hand wash or dry clean.
I was also looking for a black and white striped cashmere tee, and while this one is navy, it looked so lovely I had to try it. The quality is really nice, and I love the ribbed, slightly rolled neckline and the classic stripe pattern. The sleeves are a little longer than I typically prefer, but they’re fine.

Here’s a more modern styling option with this classic sweater—I swapped in my PAIGE Leenah Ankle and Splendid fisherman sandals.

VERDICT: I decided this sweater is too beautiful not to keep, and it’s a timeless piece I hope to have for years.
Quince Mongolian Cashmere T-Shirt in Ivory/Black Stripe
at Quince (M/L) // MOTHER Dazzler Flood (29) // Vionic Klara (8)

Quince Cashmere Tee, size M
DETAILS: Does it get more luxe than cashmere basics? Not really. Super soft and lightweight, this short sleeve cashmere sweater is a wardrobe staple for layering all year round. Tees are meant for everyday wear. Now yours can be cashmere.
- Crewneck
- Short sleeves
- Crafted from 100% Grade-A Mongolian cashmere
- Ribbed detailing at neckline, cuffs and hem
- Hand wash using cold water and neutral soap or baby shampoo.
- Rinse out without rubbing and lay flat to dry.
- If you prefer to dry clean, please ask for delicate detergent.
I also ordered this ivory and black stripe version from Quince, and while the cashmere isn’t quite as soft or thick as the one from Banana Republic, it’s a really good value for $44.90.
I like the slightly shorter sleeve length on this one, but the size medium felt a little skimpy—I felt like it was too clingy, and I kept tugging at it, so I re-ordered in a large. I like the looser fit, and while the sleeves probably look a little too roomy, I’d rather that than feel like I’m constantly adjusting it.

I also like how it front tucks. I actually wore this outfit to the mall with the black ballet flats a few days ago.

Quince Cashmere Tee, size L // MOTHER Dazzler Flood – on sale! (30) // Margaux Demi Flat (39)
VERDICT: Even though it’s designed to have a more classic, close-to-the-body fit, I decided to keep the large. I just feel more comfortable with some extra wiggle room—and I don’t have to worry about it clinging to any lumps and bumps.
Nordstrom Crewneck Sweater in Ivory T- Black Lake Stripe
at Nordstrom (S) // MOTHER Dazzler Flood on sale at Saks (30) // Margaux Demi (39)

DETAILS: Drapey dolman sleeves frame this crewneck sweater knit in a slouchy fit.
- Crewneck
- Short sleeves
- 100% cotton
- Machine wash, dry flat
I also ordered this as an option for a black and white stripe sweater, but I don’t care for the boxy, oversize fit. I could maybe size down, but I don’t love it enough to re-order it.

VERDICT: I sent this one back.

I wanted to throw this in here because cute jackets always sell out quickly. I like the shorter styling, and the linen blend is lightweight and comfortable for warmer weather. It also comes in black.
VERDICT: I’m holding onto this one! It does run small, so you may want to size up, if ordering.
EVEREVE Jane Pullover

I had this top last year, and I was thrilled to see it back in this pretty green stripe.

I have this tee in the white, and I love it, so when I saw this pretty heather gray on sale, I ordered it. I wear the white in the XS, but I’m so glad I thought to order this one in both the XS and S because I ended up liking how the small fits better. It’s on the longer side, so I always front tuck it, and it has such a nice drape.

VERDICT: Keeping! I actually wore this tee and these jeans last night.

When I spotted these MOTHER Dazzlers in the Saks sale, I decided to give them another try. (I ordered the size 29 back in January and they were too small, but I never re-ordered.) This time, I went with the 30,and they fit great.
I love this wash. It’s such a good faded black—what they call “washed black.” I also like that they have a finished hem. They’re very similar to my AG Mari jeans, but just a bit shorter and more comfortable in the waistband, so I decided to keep them.

VERDICT: Kept them! Wore them! Love them! MOTHER denim rarely goes on sale, so if you’ve had your eye on these, this is a great time to grab them.
