A new wave of Gen Z-led protests against Peru’s government turned violent overnight, prompting national outrage and an official investigation into the death of 32-year-old protester and hip-hop artist Eduardo Ruíz. Authorities confirmed Thursday that Ruíz was shot during massive demonstrations in Lima, where thousands gathered to demand the resignation of President José Jerí and several lawmakers. According to Peru’s Ombudsman’s Office, nearly 100 people were injured in the clashes, including at least 80 police officers and 10 journalists. The violence has reignited memories of deadly crackdowns under the previous administration and further eroded public trust in Peru’s fragile democracy.

Nine-time NBA All-Star and former league MVP Russell Westbrook has agreed to a one-year, $3.6 million veteran’s minimum contract with the Sacramento Kings, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania. The 36-year-old guard is set to join his seventh team in his 18th NBA season, bringing his trademark intensity and experience to a revamped Kings roster that now features Domantas Sabonis, DeMar DeRozan, Zach LaVine, and Dennis Schroder. Westbrook is expected to join the team later this week as training camp progresses.
Last season with the Denver Nuggets, Westbrook averaged 13.3 points, 6.1 assists, 4.9 rebounds, and 1.4 steals while shooting 44.9% from the field across 75 games.
