Ghana is mourning a national tragedy after a military helicopter crashed in the southern Ashanti region on Wednesday, killing all eight people on board. Among the victims were Defense Minister Edward Omane Boamah and Environment Minister Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, both of whom were traveling from the capital, Accra, to the mining town of Obuasi. The Ghana Armed Forces confirmed that contact with the Z9 helicopter was lost during the flight, prompting an immediate search and rescue operation that later confirmed the fatal crash.
In a video statement, President Nana Akufo-Addo’s chief of staff, Julius Debrah, expressed deep sorrow over the incident and declared that national flags would fly at half-mast until further notice.
