Misty Copeland Is Retiring—But She’s Still Intent on Transforming the Dance World
— Harper’s BAZAAR (@harpersbazaarus) October 22, 2025
Misty Copeland, the first Black female principal dancer at American Ballet Theatre, officially retired on Wednesday, marking the end of a groundbreaking 25-year career that redefined representation in classical ballet. Copeland, 43, will be honored with a gala performance at Lincoln Center’s David H. Koch Theater, where she’ll return to the stage for the first time in five years to perform a final duet as Juliet—one of ballet’s most beloved roles. The event, which will also stream live to nearby Alice Tully Hall for public viewing, celebrates Copeland’s legacy as both an artistic force and an advocate for diversity in a traditionally white-dominated art form.
Since joining ABT as a teenager in 2001, Copeland’s journey from a modest upbringing in San Pedro, California, to international stardom has inspired millions. Her 2015 promotion to principal dancer, the first for a Black woman in ABT’s 75-year history, was a defining moment for ballet’s evolution. Beyond the stage, Copeland has authored books, including her Bunheads children’s series, and launched the Misty Copeland Foundation, which runs “Be Bold,” a program aimed at empowering children of color through dance. Reflecting on her retirement, Copeland said, “It’s time for me to move to the next stage.” Though she hinted she may dance again someday, her farewell symbolizes the closing of a transformative chapter—one that forever changed the face and future of ballet.

Indiana Pacers rookie guard Kam Jones was arrested in Indianapolis following a brief police pursuit on Interstate 65, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. Authorities say a state trooper attempted to stop Jones for erratic driving and speeding, reportedly clocking him at 90 mph in a 55 mph zone. When Jones allegedly failed to pull over, officers initiated a short chase before taking him into custody. He now faces preliminary charges of misdemeanor reckless driving and felony resisting law enforcement. Court documents reveal that Jones told officers he was unaware of his speed and was running late for team practice.
The Pacers acknowledged the incident in a statement, saying they are “gathering additional information” before commenting further. On Tuesday, October 21, Jones and head coach Rick Carlisle addressed reporters, downplaying the event as “nothing more than a speeding ticket.” Jones later issued an apology to the organization and fans, calling the experience “pretty traumatic” and pledging that it “won’t happen again.” The 23-year-old rookie, drafted 38th overall out of Marquette, has yet to make his NBA debut due to a lingering back injury. At Marquette, Jones earned All-American honors after averaging 19.2 points and 5.9 assists per game and leading the Golden Eagles to the 2024 Sweet 16.
