When it comes to beach and pool days, having the right pieces makes all the difference—not just for style but for practicality, too. I’ve found two fantastic beach bags that are both stylish and easy to pack, plus a cover-up that strikes the perfect balance between modest and chic.
While I’m keeping my swimsuits simple with classic one-pieces, the real game-changers are the accessories—because a well-chosen bag, cover-up, and sunhat can elevate even the most basic swim look. Let’s get into the details!
Every year, I look for a great cover-up—something that gives me the right amount of coverage for going to and from the beach or pool but still looks stylish. And, of course, it has to be easy to slip on and off without any awkward poolside struggles… if you know what I mean. This year, I found a new favorite!
The Seafolly Essential Cover-Up checks all the boxes. It comes in black and white (shocker—I went with the black!). I actually ordered both, but the white was very sheer, so I decided the black was the better choice for a little extra coverage. It has an oversized fit, but I still sized up to a medium since it made getting it on and off even easier.
I love the flattering V-neck, roll-tab sleeves, and the exaggerated shirttail hem that hangs longer in the back for just a bit more coverage. It’s easy, breezy, and super comfortable, but it still feels stylish and put-together. Oh, and it also has pockets!

Another beach and poolside essential I can’t be without is a really good tote bag. I always look for one that lays flat in my suitcase for easy packing, but I also love when a bag holds its shape once unpacked—a rare combination. The rag & bone Daily Straw Tote does both beautifully and works just as well as a beach bag as it does a day tote.

It’s made of a gorgeous raffia, and the black leather straps add just the right touch of sophistication. I even carried it to dinner one night with a black dress, and it worked perfectly. I also used it to bring my laptop downstairs to the lobby in the mornings while my husband slept in.
And, of course, it’s great for the pool or beach. It stands up on its own, is surprisingly durable, and the sand shakes right off. There’s even an interior pocket where I can stash my phone and AirPods. Definitely a winner in my book!

Another great option—and a brand that’s new to me—is the ALOHA Collection Day Tripper Tote. This bag is incredibly versatile, making it perfect for everything from travel days to beach trips. It’s made from a lightweight, water-resistant material that protects against splashes, spills, and unexpected weather.

One of my favorite things about this tote is the expandable zippered top, which maximizes space when you need it but keeps things compact when you don’t. It also has two zippered pockets—one on the outside and one inside—perfect for stashing smaller items and keeping them secure.
Whether you’re using it as a carry-on, a beach bag, or even a diaper bag, it adapts to whatever your day holds. And bonus—it’s super easy to clean! Just wipe it down with a damp cloth or toss it in the wash on a delicate cycle. If you need a do-it-all bag that can handle a little bit of everything, this one’s definitely worth checking out!

When it comes to sun protection, a good hat is a must, and the Eric Javits Hampton Sun Hat is my absolute favorite. I’ve tried a few over the years, but this is the one I keep reaching for—it’s definitely a splurge, but I’ve had mine for at least five years, and it still looks brand new.
What really sets this hat apart is its built-in SPF, blocking 95% of UVA and UVB rays—so it’s more than just an accessory, it’s true sun protection. And with its elegant broad-brim design, it’s as stylish as it is practical. I always wear it when I’m at the beach or poolside to keep my face shaded. I also love the elasticized band, which keeps it comfortably in place—even on windy days.

As an added bonus, it’s designed for travel. Made from a durable straw-look polypropylene, it packs easily and retains its shape, though to be safe, I usually pack mine by placing it upside down in my suitcase, filling the crown with soft items, and packing around it. If you’re looking for a sun hat that’s both chic and functional—and one that will last for years—this one’s worth considering.
If you love the look but want a more budget-friendly option, I’ve heard great things about Wallaroo sun hats, and this one has a similar style at a lower price point.

The one item I haven’t mentioned yet is my favorite flip-flops. These beek Sunbeam Flip Flops are the perfect blend of style and practicality. I discovered them last year, and I’ve worn them so much that I’m considering a second pair. They have the classic thong flip-flop design, but since they’re made of leather, they’re far more durable and look polished enough to wear out to dinner with a casual dress.
The best part? They have arch support, making them surprisingly comfortable for a flip-flop. They’re also super flat and easy to pack, so I always bring them when I travel—even in winter—just to have something to throw on in my hotel room. Whether I’m heading to the beach, the pool, or just running errands, these are my go-to summer sandals.

And of course, don’t forget your sunglasses! A great pair is essential for both style and sun protection—I never head to the beach or pool without mine. I picked up these fabulous Celine round sunglasses last year when they were on sale at Saks, but If you love the look but don’t want to splurge, I found a great dupe on Amazon that has a similar look for a fraction of the price.

And that wraps up my pool-to-beach essentials! From the perfect packable beach bags to a stylish sun hat and versatile cover-ups, these are the pieces I reach for to stay comfortable and put-together by the water. Whether you’re planning a tropical getaway or just prepping for summer, I hope this gives you some inspiration for effortless, chic swim looks!
