New Try-On Haul: Fall Tops, Jeans, Shoes & More | Jo-Lynne Shane

Happy Friday, friends! I finally have a new try-on haul for you, and this one’s a fun mix. I did two big in-store try-ons at EVEREVE and a short one at Aritzia, and I also have a few new arrivals from Nordstrom, Frank & Eileen, and LOFT that came in the mail this week. Between cozy fall tops, great denim, and a few pairs of shoes, there’s a lot to share—so let’s get started with EVEREVE!

Michael Stars Nara Mock Neck in Nocturnal

at EVEREVE (M) // KUT Kelsey (8) // Dolce Vita Roslyn (8.5)

PRODUCT DETAILS: A stylish essential, the Nara top by Michael Stars is crafted in rib knit fabric and features a sleeveless silhouette.

  • Material: 61% Cotton, 37% Viscose, 2% Spandex Knit
  • Care: Machine Wash, Wash Cold, Dry Flat

MY THOUGHTS: I was so happy to spot this top in the store. I mentioned in yesterday’s post that I’ve been looking for more tops that work well under jackets but can also be worn on their own—in other words, shorter and more fitted than a basic tee, but not tight or cropped like so many styles are right now. Basically, a unicorn!

I have this one in the green version from last year, and it’s still one of my favorites for transitional weather. The length and shape are so flattering—it’s cut close to the body without feeling clingy, and it’s the perfect length to wear tucked or untucked.

I also love the soft cowl neck and ribbed texture. It adds just enough detail while keeping things simple and easy to layer. The color isn’t quite as versatile as some of my other tops, but it’s really pretty. Even though it’s blue, there’s a subtle black variation in the knit that makes it pair surprisingly well with black. I’ll top it off with my leather jacket when the weather cools down. (See that look HERE!)

VERDICT: Keeping! I’ve already worn it once with black jeans, and I also really like how it pairs with rust tones for fall.

Varley Aspen Gilet

at EVEREVE (S) // Splendid Bamboo Layering Tee (S) // MOTHER The Kick It (29) // Dolce Vita Roslyn (8.5)

PRODUCT DETAILS: Perfect for topping off any cool-weather look, this plush sherpa vest by Varley features a foldover rib knit collar, zipper closure, and side pockets.

  • Length from Shoulder to Hem: 22.8″
  • Material: 100% Polyester
  • Care: Machine Wash, Wash Cold, Delicate / Gentle Cycle, Dry Flat

MY THOUGHTS: I wasn’t quite as thrilled with this sherpa vest. I thought it might be a fun, casual layer to throw on with jeans and sneakers, but the oversized collar felt a little overwhelming on me, and I wasn’t a fan of the large front pockets. It looks slightly better left unzipped (you can see it that way on the model), but the top I had on underneath was so tight and thin that I didn’t care to share those photos, ha! The color also felt a bit bland in person.

VERDICT: I left this one in the store.

MOTHER The Kick It in Fan Favorite

at EVEREVE, Saks & Bloomingdale’s (29) // Avery Barn Jacket in Plaid (S) // EVEREVE Ever Slim Tee (M) // Dolce Vita Roslyn (8.5)

PRODUCT DETAILS: A relaxed straight leg defines The Kick It jean by MOTHER, featuring full-length hems, soft stretch denim, and a light blue wash. Dressed up or down, they’ll be your new favorite denim staple.

  • Front Rise: 10 1/2″; Inseam Length: 32″; Leg Opening: 17 3/4″
  • Material: 78% Cotton, 16% Modal, 4% Polyester, 2% Elastane Denim
  • Care: Machine Wash, Wash Cold, Hang To Dry

MY THOUGHTS: Sadly, this plaid jacket is sold out online, but I’ll share these photos for the jeans. I’ve been on the hunt for a more relaxed full-length jean, but this pair didn’t quite win me over. For one thing, they were a too tight in the waist in my usual size 29, and the store didn’t have the size 30 to try. They’re also quite long, which makes it hard to really see the leg shape—though I’d definitely have them hemmed if I decided to keep them.

VERDICT: I left these in the store for now, but I might order the 30 to see how they fit if I don’t find another pair I like better.

Avery Barn Jacket in Olive

at EVEREVE (M) // LOFT wedge sweater (S) // AG Brinley (29)

PRODUCT DETAILS: This green barn jacket by EVEREVE is the perfect fall-forward layer, featuring a zip-up silhouette, cropped length, and contrasting collar.

  • Measurements: Length from Shoulder to Hem: 21 1/2″
  • Material: 61% Lyocell, 37% Cotton 2% Spandex Woven
  • Care: Machine Wash, Wash Cold,Delicate / Gentle Cycle, Tumble Dry Low, Use Non-Chlorine Bleach, Iron Low

MY THOUGHTS: This jacket was one of the main items I went to EVEREVE for that day. I’d spotted it online and had a feeling I’d love it—and I do! It has a great boxy fit, and the olive color with the contrasting collar and cuffs gives it a really cool, casual vibe. The plaid lining is such a fun detail too, and it adds a bit of extra warmth for fall.

I also tried it with the Zoe Sleeveless Sweatshirt for a sporty twist, but the combination of the collar and hood felt like a lot, and I wasn’t crazy about the banded waistband. It seems to call attention to that area, which is not my goal.

VERDICT: I tried both the small and the medium in this jacket and ended up going with the small. It’s comfortable and still has that relaxed look without the extra bulk through the arms and body—though I did like the added length the medium provided. I’ve tried it with a few different jeans, and it definitely looks best with my higher-rise styles, which is a little limiting, but I’m still really enjoying it.

Zoe Sleeveless Sweatshirt

at EVEREVE (M) // AG Brinley (29) // Dolce Vita Roslyn (8.5)

PRODUCT DETAILS: Perfect for all your weekend looks, the Zoe Sweatshirt by EVEREVE features a sleeveless silhouette, adjustable drawstring hoodie, and is finished in a soft rib knit fabric.

  • Measurements:Length from Shoulder to Hem: 22 1/2″
  • Material: Shell: 61% Rayon, 29% Polyester, 10% Spandex Knit Contrast: 95%Rayon, 5% Spandex
  • Care: Machine Wash, Wash Cold, Dry Flat

MY THOUGHTS: This one just wasn’t my favorite. The color felt a little too warm on me, and the banded waist didn’t do me any favors—it’s not the most flattering silhouette.

VERDICT: I passed on this one.

Marina Pullover in Black

at EVEREVE (M) // AG Brinley (29) // Sam Edelman Bianka (8.5)

PRODUCT DETAILS: Sheer puff sleeves add a chic statement to this crew neck sweater by EVEREVE, featuring a fitted rib knit body and cropped length.

  • Length from Shoulder to Hem: 20 1/8″
  • Material: 46% Polyester, 20% Viscose, 19% Acrylic, 15% Nylon
  • Care: Hand Wash, Wash Cold, Dry Flat

MY THOUGHTS: I really like this top for dressier winter occasions. The ribbed portion is soft and comfortable, and while it’s definitely on the clingy side, I think I can make it work with higher-rise pants. (Since I’m short-waisted, higher rises help smooth things out and minimize that muffin-top effect.) The sheer puff sleeves create such a pretty contrast—they add just the right amount of interest without feeling over the top.

I think this top will look amazing with coated black jeans, so now I’m on the lookout for a new pair. (My old ones got too small, and I passed them along at the end of last season.) I also love how it pairs with these red slingback pumps, even though I didn’t end up buying them.

Celine Pullover

at EVEREVE (S) // AG Brinley (29) // Sam Edelman Bianka (8.5)

PRODUCT DETAILS: Elevate your sweater collection with the Celine pullover by EVEREVE. Finished in a soft knit, this short sleeve sweater features a cropped fit and a collared quarter-zip neckline with contrast trim.

  • Length from Shoulder to Hem: 20 3/4″
  • Material: 60% Nylon, 25% Rayon, 12% Acrylic, 3% Spandex Knit
  • Care: Machine Wash, Wash Cold, Dry Flat, Use Non-Chlorine Bleach, Iron Low

MY THOUGHTS: I was initially drawn to this top for the contrasting trim and collared quarter-zip neckline. I like how those details elevate what would otherwise be a simple short-sleeve sweater tee. But once I tried it on, it felt a little too plain and conservative for my taste.

That said, it does fit the bill for a top that’s cut close to the body without being clingy, and the 21″ length is a good one—long enough to cover the waistband of jeans without feeling too long. (On me, at least; every body is different.)

Fit Tip: Knowing your “sweet spot” length for tops and tees is really helpful when shopping online—you can eliminate a lot of misses just by knowing that range. (Mine is around 20–22″ right now. I can go a little longer with certain styles, but that’s my ideal at the moment. It does change as styles and trends evolve—I probably would’ve said 23–24″ a few years ago.)

VERDICT: I didn’t buy this one, but it’s definitely worth checking out if you like the style. It’s also very soft and comfortable.

AG Brinley Straight Leg Jean in Nebula

at EVEREVE & Bloomingdale’s (29) // Celine Pullover (S) // Sam Edelman Bianka (8.5)

PRODUCT DETAILS: Easily dressed up or down, the versatile Brinley Straight Leg Jean by AG features a relaxed, mid-rise silhouette, faded black wash, and clean hems.

  • Front Rise: 10 1/4″; Inseam Length: 29 1/2″; Leg Opening: 16″
  • Material: 72% Cotton, 26% Lyocell, 2% Spandex/Elastane Denim
  • Care: Machine Wash, Wash Cold, Hang To Dry

MY THOUGHTS: These jeans aren’t bad, but the 29 was too small and there wasn’t a 30 in-store to try. I also don’t really need another pair of black straight-leg jeans—although these are a bit more relaxed and slightly longer than my MOTHER Dazzlers, so I might keep them in mind. I mostly grabbed them to try on with these two sweaters.

VERDICT: I didn’t purchase these either, but I’m going to keep them in mind if I find myself wanting a pair of black jeans with this silhouette.

LNA Harrison Tee in Heather Oat

at EVEREVE (M) // Bobbie Zip Utility Jacket (S) // MOTHER denim (30) // Sam Edelman Saige Bootie (8.5)

PRODUCT DETAILS: This versatile tee by LNA is the perfect wardrobe essential, crafted in soft rib knit fabric with a crew neckline, slim fit, and short sleeves.

  • Length from Shoulder to Hem: 22″
  • Material: 95% Rayon, 5% Spandex Rib Knit
  • Care: Machine Wash, Wash Cold, Delicate / Gentle Cycle, Tumble Dry Low

MY THOUGHTS: I tried on this top in-store because I wanted something to wear with the Avery Barn Jacket (shown below), but they didn’t have my size, so the store ordered the medium and shipped it to me. It’s definitely more fitted than I usually prefer, but I like that it’s double-layered, and the oatmeal color is really good—versatile without being boring.

I shared it on my Instagram Story, and I guess I forgot to take any photos without the jackets on top… sorry about that!

VERDICT: I decided to keep this one. It’s a solid basic and works well as a layering piece, but I probably won’t reach for it on days when I plan to take my jacket off.

Wilfred London Wool Cashmere Cardigan in heather nomad taupe

at Aritzia (M) // MOTHER Outsider Flood (30) // rag & bone Walker Boots (similar) (39)

PRODUCT DETAILS: This is a fully fashioned crewneck button-up cardigan with raglan sleeves. It’s knit from a lofty, spongey yarn that’s naturally warm and luxuriously soft.

  • Materials: 70% wool, 30% cashmere
  • Care: Hand wash

MY THOUGHTS: I stopped into Aritzia while shopping with my daughter last weekend. We both tried on a few things, and this cardigan was one of them. I loved the color and the quality of the knit, but something about the fit just didn’t feel quite right on me.

I tried unbuttoning the bottom button since I didn’t like how it hugged my middle when fully buttoned—and that’s kind of the trend anyway. (In hindsight, I probably should’ve undone one or two buttons on top as well. It would work better layered over a cami.) Still, I just couldn’t get excited about it.

VERDICT: I ended up leaving this one behind. The fit wasn’t quite right, and I didn’t love it enough to justify bringing it home.

Aritzia The Limitless Pant in Light Birch

at Aritzia (10 short) // Aritzia cardigan (M)

PRODUCT DETAILS: Beloved for their easy-wear refinement and impeccable tailoring, these are high-rise wide-leg pants with a flat front, classic fit and an elastic back waist — so you can be comfy and look sharp. They’re expertly tailored with Crepette™ — our one-of-a-kind Japanese crepe fabric beloved for its subtle texture, breezy drape and the fact that it basically never wrinkles.

  • Content: 100% polyester
  • Care: Machine wash
  • Length: Full — Intended to be a long pant and hit at the ground while wearing heeled shoes
  • Garment Inseam: Size 4 Short is 30″ — Inseam varies by size

MY THOUGHTS: I’ve been wanting to incorporate some trousers into my wardrobe that I can wear to church and also pair with sneakers or Mary Janes for more casual looks. Trousers like this are everywhere in London and NYC, and I love the idea in theory—but I never love the way they look on me. They tend to add a lot of volume through the hips and thighs, which makes me feel bigger than I am.

It’s also tricky to find a pair that’s short enough. I first tried these in the regular length, but they were way too long, so they brought me the short version. They also run small—the size 10 was still a bit tight in the waist (I started with an 8 and couldn’t even button it!). I didn’t feel like trying the 12, but I don’t actually hate how these look. The 12 would probably be baggier through the hips, though, which is exactly what I don’t love about trousers.

Anyway! I might try a darker color at some point, but I didn’t purchase these.

VERDICT: I left these in the store for now. The fit wasn’t quite right, and I’m still not sure this silhouette is for me.

Aritzia Bare Cashmere V-neck Sweater in Flashing Red

at Aritzia (M) // LOFT Jeans (29) // similar Vince boots (8)

PRODUCT DETAILS: This is a fully fashioned V-neck sweater with a classic fit. It’s made made with Aritzia’s Bare Cashmere — lightweight, all-season 100% cashmere yarn coveted for its signature softness and warmth. The finest available.

  • Materials: 50% recycled cashmere, 50% cashmere
  • Care: Hand wash

MY THOUGHTS: This is another Aritzia sweater I tried on that day, but I didn’t get any pictures in-store, so I came home and tried it on with a few different pairs of pants. I fell in love with the color, and I always appreciate a good V-neck pullover. That said, this one has the trendy cropped length and a slightly nipped-in waist—a cut that isn’t the most flattering on me these days.

After trying it at home with several different pants, I’m still on the fence. I usually prefer tops that don’t draw attention to my midsection, but the color is so beautiful and the knit is just lovely… so we’ll see.

VERDICT: I’m undecided on this one..

LOFT Fresh Cut High Rise Straight Jeans in Washed Black

at LOFT (29) // Aritzia sweater (M) // similar Vince boots (8)

PRODUCT DETAILS: Vintage-inspired, with a waist-flattering high rise and comfort stretch; Straight – fitted through the hip and thigh, opening up at the knee for a perfect straight leg.

  • Sits at high waist, 12 1/2″ rise
  • Ankle length, 28″ inseam
  • 78% Cotton 18% Lyocell 3% Elasterell-P 1% Spandex

MY THOUGHTS: LOFT has really come a long way with their denim. I like the wash and the fit on these quite a lot. I’m just not sure I’m still into the raw hem, but otherwise, they’re really good.

The only issue is the length—it’s a bit awkward with these booties. The hem kept catching on the top of the boot shaft, so I tried them with my VEJAs instead, and that pairing works much better. Still, the jeans could stand to be either a smidge shorter or a bit longer. They could easily be trimmed, or they might shrink slightly after the first wash.

VERDICT: I didn’t keep them since I don’t really need another pair of jeans and the length felt a little off on me, but they’re definitely worth a try if you’re in the market for a new pair—the price is great.VERDICT:

Sanctuary Eloise Trouser

at EVEREVE (29) // Michael Stars Nara (M) // Sam Edelman Bianka (8.5)

PRODUCT DETAILS: Chic and versatile, these Sanctuary trousers will be your go-to for work, weekend, and everywhere in between. The Eloise wide leg trouser features a relaxed, high-rise silhouette with side pockets and a full-length inseam.

  • Front Rise: 11 1/2″; Inseam Length: 32″; Leg Opening: 22 1/2″
  • Material: 64% Polyester, 32% Rayon, 4% Elastane
  • Care: Machine Wash, Wash Cold, Hang To Dry

MY THOUGHTS: This is another pair of trousers I ordered, thinking I could easily dress them up or down. I love that they have an elastic back waist for added comfort—and a little extra room that some of us need, ahem! And I appreciate the high 11 1/2″ rise. (Mid-rise trousers always create a muffin-top on me.) But once again, they just look so long and droopy through the hip area and add extra volume exactly where I don’t need it.

And seriously, these are so stinkin’ long! I’m wearing heels here, and they’re still dragging. How do people wear them with sneakers?!

I also tried them with the red Aritzia Bare Cashmere V-neck, since it’s short and nipped in at the waist, but I don’t find this combination terribly exciting. A red sweater with black pants and black boots just gives me office holiday party vibes—and not in a good way, ha!

So then I thought, okay, let’s try them the way the kids are wearing them—with a fitted top tucked in. I pulled out this LOFT scoop-neck tee that I ordered for that purpose (also wearing my Veronica Beard Kelby Booties with a 2¼” heel). It’s hard to see since it’s black on black, but honestly, it just highlights everything I don’t love about my body these days. And even though they have a high rise, it’s still not where I want to add a belt—which is really what this look needs to feel more finished.

Technically, I could add a topper, like an oversized blazer or something, since that’s “the look” right now, but it would completely swallow my shape. I don’t even own one because that style just isn’t for me.

And then we’re back to the question: where would I even wear it? Out to dinner, maybe—but honestly, I just prefer more figure-flattering silhouettes.

VERDICT: I returned these. They’re soft, well made, and on-trend, but the fit and proportions just don’t work for me. I think I’ll sit this one out and stick with styles that feel a little more streamlined.

LOFT Ribbed Scoop Neck Long Sleeve Tee

at LOFT (M) // Sanctuary Trousers (29) // Veronica Beard Kelby Booties (8.5)

PRODUCT DETAILS: In a soft and stretchy ribbed knit, this forever essential fits and flatters in all the right places – worn alone or layered. Scoop neck. Long sleeves.

  • Measurements: 24″ long
  • Materials: 94% Modal 6% Spandex
  • Care: Machine Washable

MY THOUGHTS: I purchased this top to try under some of my jackets, just to have a smooth base layer that I can tuck in. I like that it has the look of a bodysuit without the… well, bodysuit issues. It’s a soft modal/spandex blend that feels really nice against the skin, and I love the scoop neckline. So many base layers are crewneck, and I find an open neckline so much more flattering. The scoop also feels a bit more modern than a v-neck right now.

That said, it’s definitely body-con—not the most forgiving on the midlife middle. It might look fine when I’m standing straight and taking a mirror selfie, but once I sit down or move around, I start to feel a little self-conscious. Still, I think this top could be useful with certain outfits, and it’s a great price, so I went ahead and kept it. We’ll see if I actually reach for it! If not, it’s not a big financial investment.

VERDICT: Keeping for now—it’s a good basic, and we’ll see if it earns its spot in my closet.

Frank & Eileen Galway 31″ Full-Length Wide-Leg Jean

at Frank & Eileen (29) // Jenni Kayne Flynn (S) // Sam Edelman Saige Bootie (8.5)

PRODUCT DETAILS: A longer version of our wide-leg Galway jean with a highly-requested 31” inseam and finished hem. Designed for a mid-rise with a wide-leg fit and full length.

  • Zip fly with hook-and-bar closure
  • Inseam: 31″, front rise: 10.5″, leg opening: 21.5″
  • Materials: 81% Cotton, 11% Lyocell, 6% EME, 2% Elastane

MY THOUGHTS: My tall ladies are going to love these jeans! The price point is definitely up there, but the quality is excellent. They’re incredibly soft and comfortable, and I love the wash. I just wish the whiskering at the hips wasn’t quite so exaggerated, but otherwise, they’re great.

My only issue is the length—they’re too long to wear with any of the boots in my closet, so I’d need to have them hemmed. (I measured, and mine are 32″, not 31″ as listed on the Frank & Eileen website.) They also felt a little snug in the 29, so I might need a 30 in these.

VERDICT: Because I’d need to hem them and possibly size up, I decided to return this pair. I really don’t need them since I still have—and love—the NYC Wide Leg Trouser, which is very similar and works with flats. But for my taller readers who’ve been asking for longer inseams from Frank & Eileen, these are definitely worth checking out!

Nation Los Angeles Colette Cardigan Top in Russet

at EVEREVE (M) // MOTHER jeans (30) // Sam Edelman Saige (8.5)

PRODUCT DETAILS: Finished in soft Peruvian cotton slub fabric, this stylish long sleeve tee by Nation Los Angeles features a V-neck silhouette with gold snap buttons, shirred shoulders, and a fitted, banded hemline.

  • Length from Shoulder to Hem: 22 1/4″
  • Material: 100% Peruvian Cotton Knit
  • Care: Machine Wash, Hang To Dry

MY THOUGHTS: I love this top—it’s so fun and a little different. It feels more elevated than a basic tee but isn’t quite a sweater either, which makes it a great in-between piece. The banded hemline doesn’t bother me here because it isn’t clingy, and the slightly longer length actually makes it more flattering. I also love the color and the contrasting gold buttons—they add just the right amount of detail.

VERDICT: Definitely keeping this one. As an aside, these jeans are one of the pairs I’m having shortened to wear with lower heels. They were an #NSale purchase, and I’m so glad I grabbed the size 30. They’re definitely more comfortable than my size 29s.

KUT from the Kloth Meg Fab Ab High Waist Wide Leg Jeans in Camel

at Nordstrom (similar at EVEREVE) (6) // Harper Matte Coated Tee (M) // Dolce Vita Roslyn (8.5)

PRODUCT DETAILS: Crafted from a soft velveteen fabric, the Jean Trouser by Kut from the Kloth features a mid-rise waist, a full-length inseam, and a flare silhouette.

  • Front Rise: 10 1/4″; Inseam Length: 29 1/2″; Leg Opening: 22″
  • Material: 75% Cotton, 22% Rayon, 3% Spandex Velveteen
  • Care: Hand Wash, Wash Cold, Dry Flat

MY THOUGHTS: I’m already a fan of the KUT Meg, and I was immediately drawn to these camel cords. They’re such a great denim alternative that can easily be dressed up or down. Sadly, this color is low inventory at Nordstrom, but they’re still available in some other really nice fall shades. I also found a similar version with a clean hem at EVEREVE.

I do like these, but I was feeling optimistic and ordered my usual size 6. (KUT denim runs big and tends to stretch out a bit, so I typically take a 6.) But alas, these were too tight—I should’ve ordered two sizes to compare.

Anyway, they’re a great pair of pants if you can find your size!

VERDICT: I returned these for now. I might re-order in the 8 if they come back in stock at Nordstrom—or try the EVEREVE pair with the finished hem instead.

Z Supply Stella Stripe Henley in Cherry Mohogany

at EVEREVE (M) // KUT from the Kloth Meg (6) // adidas SL 72 (8)

PRODUCT DETAILS: Finished in soft rib knit fabric, this striped henley shirt by Z Supply is the perfect fall essential, featuring a fitted semi-silhouette, snap-front neckline, and long sleeves.

  • Length from Shoulder to Hem: 23 1/2″
  • Material: 50% Cotton, 49% Modal, 1% Spandex Knit
  • Care: Machine Wash, Delicate / Gentle Cycle, Dry Flat, Iron Low

MY THOUGHTS: I ordered this top because I’ve been looking for more “beyond basic” long-sleeve tees to pair with jeans and sneakers this fall. I like the casual henley style with the snap-front neckline, and it’s described as a fitted semi-silhouette (I think they meant semi-fitted), which is exactly what I want. Even so, it’s pretty snug—even in the medium.

I first tried it with the camel cords since I thought the color palette might work, but as we’ve already established, those pants are too tight in the waist—and that’s especially obvious with a body-con top! So I swapped in my MOTHER Insider Flood, since they’re one of my most comfortable pairs of jeans at the moment, and the low-profile adidas Spezial, for a softer brown footwear option.

I tried the top both front-tucked and untucked—neither thrilled me. It’s probably more flattering untucked, but it looks a little bland that way. I’m also not sure I love the length of these jeans with sneakers… or really with any sneakers. I’ve been struggling with them because I like the ankle bootcut silhouette and the wash, and they fit me well, but the length just feels awkward with anything but Mary Jane flats. But anyway, I digress—back to the top!

I also tried it with my PAIGE Anessa wide-leg jeans and the adidas SL 72, since I’m always on the lookout for more casual tops I can wear with that combo. I unbuttoned the top couple of buttons and did a light side tuck to create some shape through the waist. I know the “it look” is to tuck it in all the way around, but I’m just not a fan of that on me. Here’s how it looks with the half-tuck…

VERDICT: I’m undecided. It fills a gap in my wardrobe, but I feel like I can probably do better.

Perry Washed Rib Top in Washed Black

at EVEREVE (M) // PAIGE Anessa (30) // similar Vince boots (8)

PRODUCT DETAILS: The Perry Washed Rib Top by EVEREVE will be your go-to layer this season, featuring a crew neckline, rib knit detail fabric, and a classic fit.

  • Length from Shoulder to Hem: 23″
  • Material: 72% Polyester, 23% Rayon, 5% Spandex Rib Knit
  • Care: Machine Wash, Wash Cold, Dry Flat

MY THOUGHTS: This is another top I ordered to have some layering options under jackets, but it’s an interesting fabric. It’s quite thick, and the rib knit is rather exaggerated—if that makes sense. Even though it’s technically a basic tee, it has a slightly dressier look because of that ribbed texture.

I first tried it with the Bobbie Utility Jacket in Raisin, but it didn’t seem to complement the casual fabric of the jacket. (Or maybe I’m overthinking it—it’s been known to happen! LOL!)

So then I tried it with the AllSaints Ryder Leather Jacket in Oxblood, another #NSale purchase. I like this combo a lot, but again, the top is pretty body-con and looks a bit plain on its own.

I don’t think I’d wear it on days when I plan to take off my jacket—and I usually do when we go out to eat—so I’m not sure how much I’d actually reach for it. I feel like I’d just throw on a sweater when I want to wear this jacket, like I did when I went to the mall last weekend.

outfit details

VERDICT: I decided to return this top for now. I can always revisit it later if I find I need something like it.

Madewell The Flare Wide Leg Crop Jeans in Dark Mocha

at Nordstrom (29) // Jenni Kayne Flynn in Oatmeal (S) // old Gucci mules

PRODUCT DETAILS: The cut: a tried-and-true classic, these wide-leg jeans have a high waist, cropped length and raw hems. These are designed with the brand’s signature Magic Pockets in front for a supportive, holds-you-in feel.

  • Measurements: 27″ inseam; 26 1/2″ leg opening; 10 1/2″ front rise
  • Material: 93% cotton, 5% polyester, 2% elastane
  • Care: Machine wash, tumble dry

VERDICT: I don’t think I need to say much about these! They’re soooo dramatic. Not for me.

Favorite Daughter Collegiate Sweatshirt

at EVEREVE (S) // MOTHER Weekender (30) // old Veronica Beard boots

PRODUCT DETAILS: Perfect for weekend wear, the Collegiate Sweatshirt by Favorite Daughter is crafted from a soft cotton blend and features an easy, relaxed silhouette with dropped shoulders and block lettering across the front.

  • Length from Shoulder to Hem: 27″
  • Material: 75% Cotton, 25% Polyester Knit
  • Care: Machine Wash, Wash Cold, Tumble Dry

MY THOUGHTS: I was back at the mall on Tuesday to drop those jeans off to be hemmed, so I stopped into EVEREVE again. I was laughing with the sales associate—she knows me by now! She saw me looking in the windows, clearly debating whether or not to come in, and said she knew I couldn’t walk past without stopping.

Anyway, I told her what I was looking for—mainly casual tops to wear with jeans—so we pulled a few options. This sweatshirt is fun, but way too oversized for my taste.

VERDICT: I passed on this one.

Favorite Daughter Cropped Collegiate Sweatshirt

at EVEREVE (M) // MOTHER Weekender (30) // old Veronica Beard boots

PRODUCT DETAILS: Elevate your casual-cool look with this cropped sweatshirt by Favorite Daughter, crafted from a soft cotton blend with a crew neckline, dropped shoulders, and block lettering across the front.

  • Length from Shoulder to Hem: 21″
  • Material: 75% Cotton, 25% Polyester Knit
  • Care: Machine Wash, Wash Cold, Tumble Dry

MY THOUGHTS: I liked this one a lot better—the cropped length is more flattering, and the color is really pretty. But something about the big, long sleeves and drop shoulders just felt a little incongruous with the short, boxy body. I don’t love all that volume in the arms, and I suspect the small would be too snug through the body. (They didn’t have it in-store for me to compare.)

VERDICT: I passed on this one as well. It’s very soft and cozy, though, and very good quality. I’ll definitely keep my eye on this brand.

Millie Triblend Varsity Top in Navy

at EVEREVE (M) // MOTHER Weekender (30) // old Veronica Beard boots

PRODUCT DETAILS: A contrasting collar and shoulder seam details add a sporty edge to this long sleeve tee by EVEREVE, crafted from soft tri-blend fabric.

  • Length from Shoulder to Hem: 23 1/2″
  • Material: 43% Cotton, 41% Polyester, 16% Modal Jersey
  • Care: Machine Wash, Wash Cold, Tumble Dry Low

MY THOUGHTS: This is a great example of a “beyond basic” tee—the contrasting collar and shoulder seam details give it extra interest, but it’s still essentially just a long-sleeve crewneck tee. The fabric is very soft (I love the hint of modal in the jersey), and it has a relaxed fit that looks best tucked or at least half-tucked.

VERDICT: I like this top, but I don’t love it. I decided to pass for now, but it could be a good option if it’s something you’re looking for!

Rowan Henley Sweatshirt in Washed Maroon

at EVEREVE (M) // MOTHER Weekender (30) // old Veronica Beard boots

PRODUCT DETAILS: Crafted from a soft cotton french terry, the Rowan Sweatshirt by EVEREVE features a henley neckline, dropped shoulders, and a comfortable, relaxed fit.

  • Length from Shoulder to Hem: 22 1/2″
  • Material: 100% Cotton French Terry
  • Care: Machine Wash, Wash Cold, Tumble Dry Low

MY THOUGHTS: Now this one is really fun! I love the henley neckline, and the color is so pretty. The 22½” length is perfect for wearing untucked, but I do wish it didn’t have drop shoulders. It seems like more and more tops have those right now—ugh! I thought we just got rid of that trend.

Despite that, I decided to buy it. I love how easy it is to throw on with jeans, and I think it will look really cute with sneakers or my new Birkenstock Boston clogs. In fact, I tried it on with wide leg jeans and the clogs when I got home, and it’s such a great casual combo…

My only concern is that I should have tried the small. I only grabbed the medium, and I thought I liked it, but now that I have it home, I’m wondering if it’s a little too voluminous.

VERDICT: I still have the tags on, so I think I’ll stop back in when I get home and try the small to compare.

Michael Stars Tati Power Shoulder Top in Cement/Black

at EVEREVE (M) // MOTHER Weekender (30) // old Veronica Beard boots

PRODUCT DETAILS: A strong shoulder design elevates this striped tee by Michael Stars, crafted in soft rib knit fabric with a v-neckline and semi-relaxed fit.

  • Length from Shoulder to Hem: 23″
  • Material: 41% Polyester, 28% Cotton, 27% Modal, 4% Spandex Rib Knit
  • Care: Machine Wash, Wash Cold, Tumble Dry Low

MY THOUGHTS: Even though I really need more long-sleeve layering tops right now, this one caught my eye. I actually had it in black (and I can’t find it now—I have no idea what I did with it!), so I already knew I liked the style. It’s a ribbed knit but not super body-con, which is exactly what I need. I also love the “cement/black” stripe combination. It’s not a stark white, even though it may appear that way in these photos.

VERDICT: I bought this one. Even though it’s short -sleeved, I think it will come in handy.

Robbins Plaid Baseball Hat

at EVEREVE // Matte Coated Tee (M) // MOTHER Weekender (30)

PRODUCT DETAILS: Perfect for topping off any fall look, the Robbins plaid baseball cap by EVEREVE is crafted from soft brushed fabric with a paneled design and adjustable back strap.

  • Brim: 2 3/4″ L
  • Circumference: 22 1/2″ (Adjustable)
  • Material: 100% Polyester Woven
  • Care: Spot Clean

MY THOUGHTS: This cap caught my eye—I like that it feels a little more elevated than a typical sporty baseball cap. But it seemed too big for my head, and the material felt quite stiff.

VERDICT: I passed on this one.

Bex Split Neck Top in Brown

at EVEREVE (S) // MOTHER Weekender (30) // old Veronica Beard boots

PRODUCT DETAILS: A versatile staple for everyday wear, the Bex long sleeve top by EVEREVE is crafted from soft rib knit fabric and features a split neckline with satin trim.

  • Length from Shoulder to Hem: 22 1/2″
  • Material: 92% Modal, 8% Spandex Rib Knit; Contrast: 100% Polyester Satin
  • Care: Machine Wash, Wash Cold, Tumble Dry Low

MY THOUGHTS: This top caught my eye online, and I thought it might fit my criteria for casual tops I can layer or wear on their own. I expected it to have a more body-con fit. I actually tried the medium first, but it was way too big, so I grabbed the small. Even so, it still fits a little more relaxed than I wanted, I don’t care for the drop shoulder, and the split neck is quite low. So yeah…

VERDICT: I passed on this one as well, but it has potential and comes in lots of colors. I’m going to keep it in mind.

Caslon Raglan Sleeve Wool & Cashmere Sweater in Ivory- Black Cammie Stripe

at Nordstrom (S) // PAIGE Anessa in Dresden (30) // Dolce Vita Vaydin Bootie (8.5)

PRODUCT DETAILS: Ribbed trim outlines this supersoft sweater made of wool and cashmere for temperature-regulating comfort all day long.

  • Material: 90% wool, 10% cashmere
  • Care: Dry clean

MY THOUGHTS: This is a really nice basic! It caught my eye with the raglan sleeves, and I thought a black-and-white striped layering sweater would be great to have on hand. I also love the ribbed detailing along the sides. It has a relaxed fit and feels really versatile.

VERDICT: Keeping this one!

PAIGE Anessa High Waist Wide Leg Jeans in Dresden

at Nordstrom (30) // Caslon Raglan Sleeve Sweater (S) // Dolce Vita Vaydin Bootie (8.5)

PRODUCT DETAILS: These loose-fitting jeans get effortlessly cool style from full-length legs, a high rise and worn-and-whiskered stretch denim with amazing shape recovery.

  • Material: 93% cotton, 5% polyester, 2% elastane
  • Care: Machine wash, line dry

MY THOUGHTS: I ordered these because the pair I have (in a size 29) has been feeling tight in the waist since I got back from my trip, and I’ve been avoiding wearing them for that reason. I didn’t want to order the exact same pair in the next size up, so I decided to try this one instead. I like the slightly darker wash and the finished hem, but unfortunately, they’re too long for flats—ugh! (The pair I have is perfect with flats.)

VERDICT: I’m getting the new MOTHER Roller hemmed for a lower heel, so I decided to send these back for now. I’m afraid they’ll feel redundant once those come back, but otherwise, these are fantastic—I love the fit, the wash, and everything about them. Highly recommend!

Nordstrom V-Neck Cashmere Sweater

at Nordstrom (M) // MOTHER Insider Flood (31) // Madewell Remy (39)

PRODUCT DETAILS: Knit from lightweight cashmere, this rib-trimmed sweater has a supersoft feel and a classic fit that’s ready to take you through the seasons.

  • 24″ length (size X-Large)
  • Material: 100% cashmere
  • Care: Dry clean

MY THOUGHTS: This is another Nordstrom-brand sweater. They carry a version of it every year, and I usually end up buying one or two. I was drawn to this rich dark brown, so I grabbed it in the medium, figuring I would prefer a more relaxed fit. It’s a nice basic, but I really don’t love the dropped sleeve.

VERDICT: I can wear it as a base layer, where the dropped sleeve won’t be an issue, so I’ll keep the tags on for now and see if I actually reach for it. I’ll also keep an eye out for one I like better.

Madewell The Remy Mary Jane Flat in Haircalf

at Madewell (8h) // MOTHER Insider Flood (31)

PRODUCT DETAILS: Our spin on a classic, these haircalf Mary Jane flats feature have a round toe, adjustable buckle strap and leather trim.

  • Upper: 100% leather.
  • Lining: 100% leather.
  • Sole: 80% rubber

MY THOUGHTS: I thought these could be fun for cooler weather, once it’s too cold for my mesh pair. I love the grommets on the strap and the narrow vamp—such small details, but they make the shoes feel more modern and a little less sweet. I think that’s why I’ve finally been able to embrace the Mary Jane trend after feeling like it was too twee for so long, ha! They’re also very comfortable.

VERDICT: I think I’m keeping these, but I want to try them with a few different outfits first to make sure I really love them.

Dolce Vita Vaydin Bootie in Black

at EVEREVE (8.5) // PAIGE Anessa (30)

PRODUCT DETAILS: A versatile addition to your footwear collection, the Vaydin leather ankle booties by Dolce Vita feature a pointed-toe silhouette with an angled block heel, inside zipper closure, and stitched detailing.

  • Side Zip
  • Heel Height: 2.68″
  • Material: Leather Upper

MY THOUGHTS: I’ve been wanting a pair of more casual black boots to wear with relaxed, everyday looks, so when I was in EVEREVE, I tried these on. I really like the subtle Western-inspired vibe. I’ve had similar styles in the past that I wore a ton, and Dolce Vita boots are always reliable for me—good quality and comfortable. The higher shaft works well with shorter jeans if I want to show a bit of boot, but they also pair nicely with full-length styles.

VERDICT: Keeping!

Birkenstock Boston Rivets Clog in Taupe

at EVEREVE (39) // MOTHER Insider Flood (31) // Nordstrom V-Neck Cashmere Sweater (M)

PRODUCT DETAILS: An updated take on an iconic silhouette, these Birkenstock Boston Clogs feature a soft suede upper with silver rivet details for a stylish edge.

MY THOUGHTS: I’ve never really thought of myself as a Birkenstock Boston clog kind of girl, but I’ve been noticing them more lately and love how cute and casual they look—a nice alternative to sneakers and a fun update to the ever-present UGG. When I saw this pair with the silver rivets at EVEREVE, I was sold. They add just enough personality to make them feel like me.

VERDICT: I’m keeping these.

Gola Torpedo Sneaker in Ochre/Air/Navy

at EVEREVE (8.5) // PAIGE Anessa (29)

PRODUCT DETAILS: Make a statement with these sporty maroon and blue sneakers by Gola, featuring an ’80s-inspired silhouette with a suede upper and gum sole.

MY THOUGHTS: These sneakers also caught my eye at EVEREVE. I love this colorway, and while I don’t usually reach for my colored sneakers, I couldn’t resist throwing these into my bag. I think they’ll pair nicely with navy and other neutrals.

VERDICT: Keeping these too!

Corinne Sleek Sweatshirt

at EVEREVE (M) // Z Supply Weekend Tank (M) // MOTHER Insider Flood (31) // adidas Spezial (8)

PRODUCT DETAILS: Elevate your sweatshirt collection with the Corinne Sleek Button Down from EVEREVE. Crafted in a soft cloud scuba knit, this sweatshirt features front button closures, front patch pockets, and a relaxed fit.

  • Length from Shoulder to Hem: 23 3/4″
  • Material: Self: 49%, Rayon 45%, Ployester 6%Spandex Cloud Scub Knit Contrast
  • Care: Machine Wash, Wash Cold, Tumble Dry Low

MY THOUGHTS: This sweatshirt plays into the varsity trend that’s so popular right now, and I love the comfy scuba material and the navy with contrasting brown trim. It has a nice slouchy, relaxed fit and that casual vibe I’ve been craving in my wardrobe lately. It’s a little low-cut, so I layered it over a brown ribbed tank.

I found the denim and shoe pairing above a little awkward—the longer sweatshirt and ankle-length jeans don’t create the most flattering proportions and tend to cut me in half. So I tried it with the PAIGE Anessa wide-leg jeans and my new Golas, and I think that makes for a really cute, relaxed look.

VERDICT: I think I’m keeping this one. I’m still on the lookout for a shorter, boxier sweatshirt with fun details, but this will be a good option to have in the mix.

And that’s a wrap on this round of try-ons! It’s been fun getting back into fall fashion mode and refreshing my wardrobe with a few new pieces for the season. I found some really good basics and a few standout favorites that I know I’ll be wearing on repeat. As always, I’d love to hear your thoughts—what pieces caught your eye?
