Spending much of year in Northern California means my need for bulky coats is non existant. But now that I also spend part of the year in Vancouver, all bets are off and I need coats for all climates. With coat season in full swing, I’ve put together a guide to some of the chicest, coziest winter coats out there…no matter where you live. Whether you’re bundling up for snow days or just layering up for cooler evenings in warmer climates, this list has something for everyone. Winter Coats for Colder Weather Climates
Waterproof Down Coat
Lands End makes some of the best winter coats for nasty weather. Many are petite, regular, and plus sizes. This Expedition waterproof down coat has a 600 fill-power down for incredible warmth for all of winter’s adventures. The hood has a Sherpa lining, plus chest pockets are lined in soft fleece. The snap side vents offer ease of movement, and the adjustable cuffs offer even more warmth. This comes in black, cobalt blu,e or this pretty teal.
Long Down Puffer Coat
This uber warm Lands End Maxi Down Coat is hanging in my closet in Vancouver, awaiting my return in January. Its extra-long length will keep me nice and warm, and the lower side seam zippers will make it easy to walk. It has a two-way zipper for ventilation, and the hood is removable for warmer days. The storm flaps prevent wind from sneaking in, and the outer fabric is both water-resistant and windproof. Mine is navy, plus it comes in black, chocolate, or green in regular, petite, tall, and plus size.
Wool or Cashmere Coat
Wool Coats are one of those staple wardrobe pieces that many women rely on when the temperature dips, and for a good reason! They’re classic and warm and finish off a look without competing with your outfit or accessories. We all know the fantastic quality and great value of Quince products, and this Italian Wool Coat is no exception. The tailoring is lovely, and the Italian melted wool is exceptionally soft. Wool Blend Coat
I adore my Mango Wool Blend coat and wore the heck out of it last year. This year, it comes in 4 different neutrals. It’s nice and roomy with dropped shoulders, patch pockets, and a double-breasted closure. The notched collar gives it a nice shape to add a scarf or brooch.
Cashmere Coat
Continuing with the amazing values at Quince, this Mongolian Wrap Cashmere Coat is simply fabulous! It’s the softest coat I’ve ever felt, and its elegant shape drapes beautifully. Faux Fur Coats and Jacket
Faux fur coats and jackets add a touch of glamour to any outfit and are surprisingly warm. They’re popular every winter in all shapes and colors. The fur does add visual weight to your torso, so I like to look for ones with seaming to help slim it down, much like in a puffer jacket. Buttons, hoods, and zippers make furry jackets and coats look more casual and sporty.
Winter Coats For Warm Weather Climates
Trench Coat
A classic trench coat is a timeless option for in-between seasons and weather that’s not too cold. Wool-lined ones are also great for downright nasty weather. I’ve been wearing trench coats for 30+ years, and I love the vibe they create. The longer length makes them ideal for layering over a dress, and they’re perfect over pants and jeans. Look for a trench with flattering seams and a belt that hits the right spot on your torso. A good quality trench coat will last you for years and years. You can spend a small or large fortune on the quintessential trench, but you can also get the same look and excellent quality at a price your wallet will love. Some trenches are loaded with everything from epauletts to gun shields, so you should look for the aesthetic that fits your style.
Rain Jacket
If you live in a climate where it often rains, like Florida or the Pacific Northwest, you should consider investing in a rain jacket. A great rain jacket offers protection from the elements while still being stylish! The one I’m wearing above is from Kate Spade and is no longer available, but there are a lot of excellent options out there, like this one from LL Bean or this one from Lands’ End.
Lightweight Jackets
Quilted Shacket
Shackets of all types have been on trend for several seasons. They’re an excellent layer for those in-between days when it’s not quite cold enough for a coat but too chilly to go without an extra layer. Throw one on for early mornings, breezy evenings, or unexpected drops in temperature. Look for something versatile, like this Quilted Shirt Jacket. The quilted texture adds warmth and interest, and it can be styled in so many ways—belted for a more polished look, worn open over a base layer.
Sherpa Jacket
A lightweight Sherpa jacket doesn’t add too much warmth, but it blocks the wind and feels cozy on a clammy day. Denim Jacket
I wear denim jackets all year long (except for in the hottest weather). They’re durable, low-maintenance, and perfect for cooler weather. Recently, denim jacket silhouettes have been getting longer, which is helpful for wearing over tunics and longer tops. I’m particularly fond of denim jackets with no band at the waist, like my current favorite by Kut From The Kloth. They’re comfier around the tummy, and the shorter length is petite-friendly. Plus, they look great layered over a longer top.
Sweater Jacket or “Coatigan”
Coatigins are long-knit jackets made of heavyweight fabric that feels more like a weave. They’re a great alternative to a lightweight coat in mild weather. These are easy to toss over so many things, and their length adds a level of sophistication to your look.
