When Millie Bobby Brown announced her engagement to model and actor Jake Bongiovi—Jon Bon Jovi’s son!—she debuted a gorgeous diamond ring. Since then, it’s been joined by an equally stunning wedding band, both of which she wears often. But the story of how she got it (and why she actually has two rings) is one of the most interesting details.
The couple were first spotted together in 2021, having first met on Instagram. Brown later said they were friends for a bit, then started dating. The two announced their engagement in April 2023, with the Stranger Things actor captioning the news with a Taylor Swift quote: “I’ve loved you three summers now, honey, I want ’em all.” Fans were surprised: Bobby was only 19 at the time (Bongiovi is two years older). She later explained on the Call Her Daddy podcast that when the pair started living together, she saw a long-term future for them. “I thought, ‘Oh, I really don’t think I could ever see you as anything else. I don’t want to be with anyone else ever again. I don’t want to date, I don’t want to meet anyone, I want you.’”

Brown visited Jimmy Fallon’s show in February 2024 to tell him all the details of her engagement. She and Bongiovi love diving and went to one of their favorite spots on vacation. “We’re many meters down. He gives me a shell, and I turn it over and it’s a ring. I looked at him and he was like, “‘[unintelligible underwater noise because of scuba gear that indicated he was proposing]?'”
She excitedly put the ring on underwater, and recounted, “As I went to show him, the ring falls off my finger [and] plummets so fast it was like a cinematic movie. Jake threw himself into the water…he does a cinematic grab, and he saved the ring.” Extremely dramatic, and as Brown noted, very authentic to the couple. “I truly feel like it’s a reflection of who he is, and I feel like we’re always gonna have each other’s back. If anyone drops the ball, we’ve got it.”

As Brown explained to Fallon, the story didn’t end there. Once they had surfaced from their dive, Bongiovi proposed again (using words she could understand this time). He also told her he had another ring to give her. He’d bought this first, stand-in ring because her real engagement ring—which originally belonged to her mother—was too precious to potentially lose during an underwater proposal. Specifically, Brown imitated her mom (including with a British accent) telling him, “Absolutely not, Jake. You’re not taking my ring down there. I know you’ll drop it. And sure enough!”
In a 2023 interview with The Times, Brown shared a little more about the ring: “I’ve always loved that ring, it’s always stuck out to me, so she gave it to Jake…They were in cahoots about the whole proposal. I love that I can always keep a piece of my mum with me.”

Brown’s center diamond looks to either be cushion-cut or round-cut, with a cushion-shaped halo and pavé band, Brides reports. The estimated price point could be in the range of $75,000 to $100,000, but it’s hard to know exactly since this is a family heirloom. Page Six reported that the center stone likely weighs between three to three-and-a-half carats (although one expert placed it as closer to five) and is a classic design with timeless appeal.
Brown and Bongiovi were married twice: once, in secret, in May 2024, with just close family members as guests. Then, in October of that same year, they shared some details of their larger celebration at Villa Cetinale in Italy: featuring three wedding gowns, a white floral arch, and Stranger Things costar Matthew Modine officiating. Bongiovi also shared his own set of photos, including one of him smiling with his father.
Since their May ceremony, Brown has worn her new wedding band, even giving her followers a glimpse of the ring during a 2024 “get un-ready with me” Instagram video. It appears to be composed of emerald-cut diamonds (matching perfectly with the engagement ring).

Brown has worn her rings in a couple different configurations, although she usually prefers the standard stack, wearing her engagement ring followed by her wedding band on her left hand. By contrast, at New York Comic Con 2024 (her first appearance after her Italy wedding), Brown looked to be wearing all her jewels. As reported by Page Six, “Brown wore her emerald-cut wedding ring and sparkling band on her ring finger and her engagement ring, which she received from Bongiovi last year, on her other hand.”
It appears her heirloom 3-carat engagement ring is on her right hand, while she’s wearing a different engagement ring with her wedding band on her left. The second ring, which appears to be a solitaire style, could be the ring that Bongiovi proposed with underwater.
