What I Wore Lately: Two Weeks of Real-Life Summer Looks for Women Over 40 | Jo-Lynne Shane

Well, it’s been a whirlwind couple of weeks over here! Between moving my daughter into college in Nashville and all the usual end-of-summer chaos, I’ve barely had a chance to catch my breath, and now I’m off again. This time, I’m headed to New York City for a quick work trip.

Before I hit the road, I wanted to round up some of the outfits I’ve been wearing lately. They’re mostly just casual everyday looks, but hopefully it gives you a little inspiration to shop your closet and try some new combos as we wrap up the season.

SIZING NOTES: I’m 5’5″ and I usually wear a small or medium in tops and dresses, a 29 or 30 in jeans and pants, and a size 8 shoe. Gifted items are indicated by c/o; everything else I purchased myself.

Here’s the morning walk look… It’s nothing special, but I thought this picture was so cute with little Savannah standing there looking up at me. She knows what it means when I lace up my sneakers!

This is one of the tops I got at EVEREVE when I was at the mall. I love the henley style short sleeve sweatshirt for pairing with jeans, and it’s such a pretty color. I wore this outfit to the nail salon so I went with easy flip flops for my pedicure.

For some reason, I totally forgot to wear jewelry other than my rings, which I rarely remove. I’m not sure how that happened, I guess I was in a rush—it just goes to show what a difference a pair of earrings and a bracelet can make. This outfit looks really unfinished to me, even though the top and the jeans are both interesting and the proportions work well together.

The next day, I debuted another new EVEREVE top for a mall trip with my older daughter to shop for a wedding guest dress. I paired this brown and blue striped sweater with high-rise wide-leg ankle jeans. Since the sweater is on the shorter side, I went with jeans that have a high enough rise for the hem to overlap the waistband. The current look is to have them just meet, but for my body type (and at my age), I think a little overlap is more flattering.

Brown sandals bookend the look, and I also chose them for their molded footbed, so they’d be comfortable for a lot of mall walking. The toggle pendant necklace is new, and it’s quite affordable! It’s a mix of gold and silver metals so I also went with mixed metal earrings and then I chose a chunky silver bracelet.

This is another EVEREVE top, but it’s from earlier in the season. I feel like a walking billboard for EVEREVE these days. They just seem to find the best “beyond basic” pieces that elevate my go-to jeans-and-a-top combos. For church, I paired it with white jeans to echo the crochet trim, gold strappy sandals, and bold chainlink earrings for a fun finishing touch.”

Once we got settled into our hotel in Nashville on Friday, we changed and went downstairs for dinner. Since I had worn the other outfit two days in a row, I felt like changing into something fresh. It was really hot in Nashville last weekend, so I wore this top and the denim mini skirt, and I changed into sneakers in case we ended up walking downtown.

I wore the same pink top the next day to help her move into her apartment, but I paired it with white twill shorts. They were the only shorts I brought, and I’m not sure why I didn’t also pack some jean shorts. They would have been more practical, although Belmont has a student team that moves everything in for you, so we just had to unpack. Amazingly, my shorts stayed white through it all, and a pizza dinner, too.

The next day we did some more errands and shopping for her apartment, and I went back to the jean skirt and wore it with a graphic tee and sneakers.

By mid-afternoon, I could tell it was time for me to leave and let her settle in and get acquainted with her new roommates, so she dropped me off at my hotel. I did some work and then changed to go up to the rooftop bar for a bite to eat.

I assumed it was outdoor seating, and since it was super hot and humid, I changed into the lightest clothes I’d brought—the white shorts from move-in day (miraculously still clean, albeit quite wrinkled) and a neutral linen tank. (As it turns out, the bar was inside with A/C, and the outdoor seating was separate, so I could have worn jeans, but I was still quite comfortable in this outfit.)

And then I was up bright and early the next morning (4AM!) to fly back home. The white jeans and black top were the only items I brought that I hadn’t worn yet, so I put them together just for the sake of wearing them. The white sneakers and white ankle-length jeans create a nice long, lean leg line, so I think it works, although a camel or tan suede sneaker would be less stark. But it was fine for my short flight home.
