We’ve always marveled at the looks A-listers rock on the red carpet. Who wouldn’t? These designer gowns look glamorous on ladies like Brooke Shields and Angelina Jolie — so much so that some of these dresses deserved to be worn twice. The second time around was extra-special for these famous moms who got to see their daughters rock the gowns they once wore to major industry events.
With Zahara Jolie making headlines for recycling Angelina Jolie’s 2014 Oscars dress for her red carpet appearance at the Eternals premiere, we’re looking back on some other famous dresses that got a new life with the next generation of stars.
For the kids of these famous faces, raiding your mom’s closet must be a no-brainer — and the dresses these kids have tried on over the years are seriously gorgeous. From the cool and goth look Gwyneth Paltrow rocked at the 2002 Academy Awards to Brooke Shields’ radiant red strapless dress at the 1998 Golden Globes, these celeb moms’ dresses got some new life when the respective stars’ daughters wore them years later.

Anna Nicole Smith & Dannielynn Birkhead

In case you missed it, on May 2, Larry Birkhead shared a series of photos of his daughter Danielynn, who is looking like her mom’s mini-me! He wrote in the Instagram caption: “Kicking off @kentuckyderby weekend with Dannielynn. First up, The Barnstable-Brown Gala. Dannielynn is wearing Anna Nicole’s dress that she wore 21 years ago to this same event. Life full circle. She said she chose the dress because it was her Mom’s and ‘super cool.’”
Susan Sarandon & Eva Amurri

As it turns out, the dress was borrowed from her mom’s Susan Sarandon’s closet. Sarandon wore the Donna Karan number at the 2003 Oscars.
Catherine Zeta-Jones & Carys Douglas

While posting a gallery of photos on Instagram from her 21st birthday, Carys posted shots of her in a baby pink slip dress with white lace. Per the eagle-eyed fans, Zeta-Jones wore the dress at the 1999 MTV Movie Awards.
Brooke Shields & Rowan Henchy

“I thought it was a special night when I was nominated for a Golden Globe and wore this dress in 1998, but nothing could have prepared me to see my daughter wearing it to her prom,” Shields captioned on Instagram on June 2021.

Kaia Gerber & Cindy Crawford

As it turns out, the white body Hervé Léger dress was plucked right from her mom’s closet. Crawford last wore it alongside her ex Richard Gere at the 1993 Oscars.
Jessica Alba & Haven Warren

After some snooping, we found out that Haven was wearing the corseted black dress that Alba first wore in 2007 while promoting Good Luck Chuck.

Shields first wore the dress to the Carousel of Hope Ball in 2006, just six months after Grier was born. Talk about a timeless piece!

The dress, which was quite controversial at the time because of its goth aesthetic, features a sheer bodice and taffeta skirt. We’re happy it’s stuck around after all those years!
Faith Hill & Gracie McGraw

Shortly after, she revealed on a since-deleted post to Instagram that the look was comprised of all vintage pieces from her famous mama. “Last night in clothes my mom let me have, clutching my movie ticket to ground me from my own inner monologue,” she wrote in the caption. “Wishing I was wearing smaller underwear…..”
