Hi, friends! I’ve got a new try-on haul for you today, and this one’s a fun mix of casual and festive pieces—lots of sweaters, a few jackets and sweatshirts, and some new denim sprinkled in too!

A few of you asked in that post if straight-leg jeans are getting wider. Straight-leg jeans can vary quite a bit in width, and in last week’s try-ons I was specifically looking for more relaxed straight-leg styles to wear with my sneakers and clogs, but all the variations are still out there. I just feel like my slim straight ankle jeans are starting to look a little tired, and I wanted to try a full-length, more relaxed cut to update my casual denim options.
So anyway… with all that said, let’s get on with today’s try-on haul.
SIZING NOTES: I’m 5’5″ and I usually wear a small or medium in tops and dresses, a 29 or 30 in jeans and pants, and a size 8 shoe. Gifted items are indicated by c/o; everything else I purchased myself.
Everyday Layers & Cozy Knits
You all know how much I love knitwear! It’s pretty much what I live in during the fall and winter months, and I got rid of some old favorites last season that were starting to feel tired. So I’ve been slowly rebuilding that part of my wardrobe. As always, there are some hits and some misses!
Madewell Cashmere Button-Front Cardigan in Rust

MY THOUGHTS: I’ve shared this sweater a few times, but I haven’t given it a full review yet, and a few of you asked for more details. I was drawn to the rich shade of rust and the detailing in the knit, and when it arrived, it was even more beautiful than I anticipated.
It’s a lovely, luxe knit, and I really like the ribbed trim on the sides and under the arms, as well as the contrasting buttons. The 22″ length is perfect, and it has an easy fit that’s flattering but not too fitted. The rust color looks great with both black and blue denim, giving me plenty of styling options.

I like styling it with one bottom button and the top two unbuttoned. It opens up the neckline, prevents the hem from bunching, and gives it a relaxed, laid-back look.
VERDICT: This one’s a keeper! I’ve already worn it twice.
Sanctuary Zip-it Sweater

MY THOUGHTS: This sweater is just alright to me. It’s a pretty blue knit, and I like the raglan sleeves and the classic fit, but something about it feels a little plain and too conservative or something. Plus, the zip detail on the shoulder isn’t really visible with my hair, so it loses its most interesting design element.
VERDICT: I returned this one.
Naadam Signature Cashmere Raglan Crewneck Sweater in Bright Pink

MY THOUGHTS: I placed an order with Naadam during a sale back in early October, and it took for.ev.er. to get here. This sweater ended up being my favorite from the bunch. I think this bright pink is so fun, and I really like the fit and the details. It’s a thinner knit, but super soft and it looks and feels really high quality. It’s also on sale again, but sizes are limited. It definitely has a roomy fit—you can size down if you’re in between.
My only concern is that I won’t reach for it because it’s so bright. I’ve had a few chances to wear it, and I always end up grabbing a more muted neutral instead.
VERDICT: Still deciding on this one. What are your thoughts?
Gap Fitted Cropped Collared Cardigan in Black

MY THOUGHTS: I love this ribbed knit, and the chunky buttons and collar detail add a nice bit of interest. The price is great, and while it isn’t as luxe as the cashmere options, it’s still a classic piece I can see myself reaching for when I want something a little more fitted.
VERDICT: I kept this one. I often find myself wanting something like this for casual winter date nights, so I know it’ll get plenty of wear.
Wild Fable Crewneck Heritage Cable Cardigan in Brown

MY THOUGHTS: This one is a Target find, and I was pleasantly surprised by the fit and quality. I love the cable knit pattern and the brown shade with the contrasting buttons. I just think I might need a small.
VERDICT: I might exchange this for a small, although I have a similar one from LOFT, and I probably don’t need both.
Wide Collared Sweater Jacket in Iced Espresso

MY THOUGHTS: This is the LOFT sweater I was referring to. It has that wide collar that’s so popular right now, which adds a fun detail. They call it a sweater jacket, and I can see why—I think it would be cute worn unbuttoned over a top or tee (maybe my black scoop neck tee… I should try that). It also looks good worn buttoned up, like this.
VERDICT: This one also runs a little big. Not sure if I should try the small or not. I do plan to keep one of these. Do you have a favorite?

MY THOUGHTS: Fair Isle is really having a moment this year, and this one is so pretty and a little different. I love that it uses a stripe pattern instead of the classic yoke. It’s nice and thick, and the mix of blue and black on the bright ivory background is just gorgeous.
VERDICT: I think I’m keeping this one.
EVEREVE Jessie Cardigan

MY THOUGHTS: I bought this sweater in the medium when I was shopping at the EVEREVE in Franklin, TN, but I kept the tags on and ordered the small to compare because the medium was pretty slouchy. Well, this is the small, and wow, it’s a lot shorter than the medium! Here’s the medium, for reference:
VERDICT: Guess I’m keeping the medium!
Reformation Clara Cashmere Crew Cardigan in Cherry

MY THOUGHTS: I love this bright cherry red—it’s so pretty, especially for the holiday season, but of course you can wear it anytime. The quality of the knit is beautiful too; it feels really luxe. I just feel overall that it’s very plain, and for the price… I don’t know. I can’t get super excited about it. It’s a great basic, though.
VERDICT: I think I’ll be returning this one. I have the Aritzia v-neck in a similar shade of red, and I’m waiting for the Jenni Kayne Flynn in Crimson to arrive. (If I like the Jenni Kayne as much as I expect I will, I’ll probably return the Aritzia one because it’s a little shorter and tighter in the hem than I prefer.)
Quince Mongolian Cashmere Boatneck Sweater in Rich Burgundy

MY THOUGHTS: I had high hopes for this one, but it has a really cut under the arms. I thought maybe I’d like it better in the small, so I re-ordered that one, but it wasn’t much better. It’s also a little longer than than I like. I do like this outfit idea, though, with the PAIGE Anessa wide leg jeans and Sam Edelman Michaela Shine Flats.
VERDICT: I returned both of these.
Athleisure & Cozy Basics
Even though I’m most comfortable in jeans and a sweater, sometimes I just want something easy and comfortable to throw on for hanging out at home or walking the dog but still feel put together. I actually found a couple of good options at Walmart, believe it or not!
Scoop New Scubaknit Funnel Neck Sweatshirt

MY THOUGHTS: I’ve been on the hunt for some more casual sweatshirts, and Cyndi told me she like the Scoop brand at Walmart, so I ordered a few to try. This one is pretty good. I like the raglan sleeves and the funnel-neck detail, and the color is really pretty. The sleeves feel a little short, though. Otherwise, it’s super cute.
VERDICT: I’m going to keep looking, but this one is definitely worth a try if you need something like this.

MY THOUGHTS: This is another good one. I like the Henley neckline because you can open it up a bit, and it has the raglan shoulder seams I prefer. The arm length is better on this one, too.
VERDICT: Keeping! This is going to be a nice one to have for hanging out at home this fall and winter.
Scoop V Neck Cardigan Sweater in Black

MY THOUGHTS: This is a nice basic v-neck cardigan, but it’s too low-cut to wear alone without a tank, and it’s really thin. I also don’t love how the hem hugs my midsection.
VERDICT: I returned this one.
Vuori Halo Modern Straight Pants

MY THOUGHTS: I ordered these Vuori pants after I saw Cyndi wearing them, and they’re a really nice option for athleisure looks and hanging out at home. They have a nice, easy fit and are just the right length for wearing with my favorite sneakers.
VERDICT: Keeping these too!
Varley The Wide Leg Pants

MY THOUGHTS: I don’t like these as much as the Vuori pair. They’re thicker and a smidge shorter—just enough that they don’t work well with my sneakers. They also have seaming down the front and are a little wider than I prefer.
VERDICT: I returned these.

MY THOUGHTS: This set is so thick, soft, and cozy. I absolutely love this fabric, and the design of the top is super cute. It’s just really bulky around the middle. I wish it were a little shorter and boxier so it would hang nicely instead of bunching. The pants are also amazingly cozy, but they have a suuuuper high rise, so they tend to bulge in unfortunate places. Maybe I need the small in those… I have the small in the top.
VERDICT: I’m debating. These pieces are so cozy and comfy, but I do wish they weren’t quite so schlumpy. Even when I’m around the house, I like to feel put together.
Festive Tops & Pants
Next up, some festive tops I ordered with the holidays in mind, along with a few pairs of coated denim that work for the holidays and beyond.

MY THOUGHTS: Similar to the stripe one above, this sweater has shimmer threads throughout and an easy fit with a nice length for leaving untucked.
VERDICT: The khaki color is warmer in person than it appeared to be online, and I don’t feel like it’s as flattering on me as the ivory stripe, so I’m probably returning this one, but it’s a good one if you like the color.

MY THOUGHTS: I had these last year in the size 6 and had them hemmed for my favorite heels, but they eventually got too small, so I passed them on. I like having a pair of black coated jeans in my winter closet, so I ordered these in the size 8, which fits my current body much better. They’re very comfortable, and I like the silhouette, but I’m feeling a little over the flare at the moment. I also bought the Meg at the EVEREVE in Franklin, so I tried them on to compare…

MY THOUGHTS: I can appreciate that I look taller and slimmer in the Ana, but something about the Meg feels more modern and comfortable to me right now, and I like that I can wear them with both flats and heels.
VERDICT: Keeping the Meg and probably returning the Ana.

MY THOUGHTS: I ordered this velvet top with the holidays in mind. The color is really pretty, and it’s the kind of piece you can dress up or down. I tossed it on with these washed black jeans here, but it also looks great with coated denim, and you could easily wear it with trousers or ponte pants.

VERDICT: I’m not sure I’ll need this, but I’m holding into it for now.

MY THOUGHTS: This is another pretty holiday option. I love the mix of velvet with the sheer sleeves, and the rhinestone detail is subtle but adds just the right amount of sparkle and shine. It’s fitted and a bit of an awkward length on me. I think it would look better tucked in.
VERDICT: I don’t think I need this one, but it’s a good option!

MY THOUGHTS: Now this one, I love! It has a soft, sweater-like feel on the inside, and the mix of classic t-shirt styling with all-over sequins in that rich burgundy is the perfect juxtaposition of casual and festive. The length is just right, and it has a touch of structure through the middle, so you can easily leave it untucked. Pair it with jeans or pants (or even a skirt), add earrings, and you’re done! It also comes in a wide range of sizes—including petites!
VERDICT: Keeping! If I only keep one holiday top this season, this will be the one.
John & Jenn Noella Bowtie Cardigan in Creme

MY THOUGHTS: This one is really pretty in theory, but it’s quite short, and without a cami underneath it exposes more than I’m comfortable with. It also runs very small. This is the medium, and it still feels too tight.
VERDICT: I returned this one, but you might try it with a cami if you like the style. It’s different and very pretty!
Winter Outerwear Options

VERDICT: This one is going back.

MY THOUGHTS: This jacket is really cute, and the price is great. I love the quilted pattern, the short boxy fit, and the color is really pretty too.
VERDICT: I already have a green quilted jacket, so I probably won’t keep this one, but I wanted to share it with you in case it’s something you need.

MY THOUGHTS: I think this faux fur vest is so fun. I went ahead and styled the whole look and even shared it on Instagram, but I didn’t end up wearing it out. It feels a little over the top for my casual lifestyle, but if I have a dinner out closer to the holidays, I might pull it out.
VERDICT: I think I’m keeping this one, but I’ll leave the tags on until I’m sure.

MY THOUGHTS: I absolutely love this faux fur jacket! It’s so plush and soft, and the cropped fit with the zip front is really cute. The leopard pattern is subtle, and I feel like you could wear it with casual outfits to give them a little edge, or pair it with dressier looks too.
VERDICT: Keeping! I almost wore it out to dinner this week with Paul, but I chickened out — I hate feeling overdressed, and it was a weeknight. But I’m hoping to get a chance to wear it soon!

MY THOUGHTS: I think this jacket is so fun. It’s definitely a trend-driven piece, but not one that steps too far out of my comfort zone. I love how I styled ti here over a scoop neck tee with relaxed straight leg jeans in a lighter wash and brown suede boots with a heel. The belt has a big buckle and adds a nice focal point.
VERDICT: Keeping this one! The price is reasonable, and I think it will be fun to have even if I don’t wear it a ton.
Fall & Holiday Shoes
Finally, I have a few pairs of shoes I want to highlight! For size reference, I’m usually an 8.5 in closed shoes like boots and Mary Janes, and I sometimes size down to an 8 in flats.

MY THOUGHTS: These leopard flats are absolutely beautiful, and they came wrapped so exquisitely from Sézane. Unfortunately, they just didn’t fit my feet very well.
VERDICT: Sadly, these had to go back.
Sam Edelman Michaela Shine Mary Jane Flat

MY THOUGHTS: I paid full price for these embellished Mary Jane flats, and now they’re 42% off at Nordstrom Rack! Not sure why they’ve been relegated to The Rack, because I love them. They’re perfect for festive, casual looks, and they’re surprisingly comfortable too. The only downside is they offer zero protection from the elements, so they’re definitely a “fair weather” shoe. But on dry days, they’re so cute.
VERDICT: Definitely keeping these too!
