To get you in in the mood for the show-stopping extravaganza, the glamour and unrivalled sophistication that is Lagos Fashion Week, watch this tribute:

LAGOS FASHION WEEK celebrates a huge 15 year milestone this year, flying the flag for unabashedly fabulous African fashion – with trends that are emulated, interpreted and celebrated the world over, from Paris to New York and beyond.

African design may well be unrivalled in terms of the eternal creative spark it injects into world fashion. Celebrated designers like Saint Laurent and Vivienne Westwood have been drawing inspiration from the inimitable patterning, colour vibrancy and design boldness that emanate from Africa, season after season.

Silk patterning set the stage for unrivalled glamour. At EKI Silk
And this season LAGOS FASHION WEEK was a true showcase edition of glam, sophistication, forward-thinking design, unrivalled artistry and storytelling that’s intrinsic to every African collection.

Regal luxe at Wanni Fuga
The tactile texturing of pieces – the use of raffia, macramé, crochet and fringing in particular – stood out as a key trend – and one that will no doubt be mirrored in European and world collections next season.

WANNI FUGA
Wanni Fuga’s collection oozed unapologetic regalness! Emerald green house-coats and voluminous lounge pants, feathered details on sleeves and slack bottoms, and double-ruched skirts in deepest plum – fit for any princess – were on offer. Not just the colour combinations, but also the intricate textures and sheer opulnce of the pieces make this one of the most memorable collections at Lagos Fashion Week.

BABAYO
Watch Babayo’s show here:
Again, texture was the key feature in this beautifully tactile and organic collection by Babayo. Natural shades and black in classical (but with a twist) styles made for a collection that’s super easy to imagine in one’s wardrobe, and more to the point – pieces that you’d absolutely LOVE to possess and wear – to work, play or on holidays! The fringing on the pockets of a body-hugging dress look so ‘now’, as does the champagne wraparound-the-waist jumpsuit. What’s not to like?

CYNTHIA ABILA
Watch Cynthia Abila’s show here:
Bold statement pieces in the season’s key shades are what make Cynthia Abila’s collection one to wax lyrical about. Examples of this brilliance include a mini cloaks in patchwork featuring joyous rainbow shades, accessorised with handmade leather satchel, a dramatic headpiece that tops off a sunshine yellow coat and the pièce de résistance: a gloriously hand-painted trench-coat depicting African pots and symbolism.

ADAMA PARIS
Sengalese brand Adama Paris delivered more molten metallics to the Lagos runway. Shades of ochre, burnt orange, gold, rust, mud and stone in silk and organza underscored the feminitiy of this collection. The ruffled, pleated and gathered silhouettes looked regal, luxurious and contemporary. Above all, these pieces oozed gracefulness and elegance.

FRUCHE
The patchwork coats at Fruche wove together a tale of many cultures, but underscored the iconic African identity in all the textiles and shades utilised. The silhouettes are nipped-in-the-waist sculptural, the patterning bold and the use of colour-blocking ingenious. These are pieces of art as much as they are fashion – and above all, they heirloom pieces.

LFJ
This is modern African fashion at its very best, at LFJ. Tactile, kinetic and bold details define the pieces that have an almost architectural feel to them. Swingy macramé dresses, crocheted raffia accents on dresses and headpieces and pleats reminiscent of the work of the late Issey Miyake, look contemporary. Pastels, neutrals and white radiate freshness, with silhouettes capturing the forward-thinking quality of Lagos Fashion Week.
